I have had trouble with my Stainz but nothing of a mechanical nature or of a serious nature even,

I believe this is called quartering.

You must make sure that the side rods line up evenly, and when you have a side lined up, verify the other side is good.  It is easy to be off 1 gear tooth.  I always apply power and let the engine run at a very low speed to verify there is no binding in both directions.   I do have rollers that I place on the track and then place the engine on the rollers.

Well, I did find a repair shop. Thanks to Don at Hobby World, Jacksonville, FL it looks like I will get this locomotve repaired. He did mention that the gears could have stripped because if you take the wheels apart and you do not get them exactly in the right position the gears would strip. When I greased the gears last time I may have lifted the axel and moved the gear slightly out of sink. Most likely operator error and not LGB.

Ian, I run this little engine several hours a day and probably faster than I should.. Maybe I am expecting to much from it. It is pulling a tender and two old time passengers cars.  The axel gears look to have a conical shape worn in the middle. The last time I greased the gears I used a high temp bearing grease, so maybe that idea caused some problems.

I have an LGB Toy Train Locomotive. I believe the gears have stripped in it. Does anyone know if repair parts are available and if so where?
