On30
Posted by grandpopswalt on Thursday, October 5, 2006 1:48 AM

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of another forum here on Kalmbach or perhaps MLS or another place where the main topic is On30 railroading? I'm thinking of building a small indoor On30 layout for something to do during the winter months.

Thanks

Walt

Here's the place you'll want to visit/join:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/On30conspiracy/

The On30 Conspiracy is the oldest and largest of the groups devoted to On30, and it's made up of a good group of folks.

I have a few links to On30 stuff on my site if you wanna look.
My name is Stephen and I want to give back to this great hobby. So please pop over to my website and enjoy the free tutorials. If you live near me maybe we can share layouts. :) Have fun and God bless. http://fsm1000.googlepages.com

I'm somewhat disappointed. I thought by now there would be a whole slew of photos of On3 or On2.5 garden railway photos. Come out, come out, wherever you are.

John,

That's terrific; didn't know anyone had actually tried doing it. Appears you have no issues with aggregates fouling the turnouts. How and on what are your tracks mounted and if you are using track power, how are you cleaning the n/s rails?

Thanks for sharing

No problems with ballast as you will see on the layout page  I cheat with a spray can !

As for track it is mounted direct onto the decking shelf with pins, when the ballst is sprayed on it has the added effect of sticking the track down, another plus is the noise, the deckboards echo the rolling stock wheels giving a decent realistic train noise, you can just about here on the video found on the home page.

Track cleaning, only takes a couple of minutes with a track rubber, because its at waist height I just stroll along with a gentle pressure on the rubber. If I dont clean fro 2 -3 weeks the larger engines will still run fine.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the information. I've tried the links you sent and it's just what I was looking for.

Ian,

Good to hear your voice again. Let me make it simple for you: On30 describes a scale/gauge which is "O" scale (1:48 or 1/4" = 1') but  uses HO gauge track, which in O scale comes out close to 30" . Bachmann makes a line of On30 locomotives and cars which are pretty much parallel to their Spectrum 1:20.3 scale offering but only about 1/2 their size (and price). From what I've seen and read, this is reliable equipment and well detailed.

I live in the state of Connecticut which has a 4 to 5 month winter season. It's usually too cold or snowy to run trains during those months. So these On30 trains present an interesting opportunity to play with trains indoors during the winter.
