HELP, Recommendations for suspending 12 feet of Playmobil RC track from ceiling...
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 2, 2006 10:57 AM

Question [?] this suspension will include two radius(radii???) and will be joining an incline in which i will be mounting a 1/2"x6" with L brackets to the wall.  This is my FIRST layout, and i'd like to get it as close to right as possible!

my consideration is a metal or wood bracket (for attachment to the ceiling)  with threaded rod attached and dropping down to 1/2x6 for the straight run and jig saw plywood for the radius.

if you have had better success with another way please share.  also in the future i'd like to add truss like beams to the sides of the suspension that appear to go to the ceiling.

thanks ahead of time!!

I dont have any problem with playmobil.

I respondend to your similar message over in the construction section of the forum. I suggested an easy option may be to use medium/heavy duty fishing wire. Not a keen fisherman my self but I do know the line has a BIG breaking strain. If you put a pair of hooks in the ceiling the same width as a plexiglass former, you could wire down from one hook under the plexi and back up to the second hook.

Model boats use a "turnbuckle" which is a mine wire tensioner. Put one on one side of the wire and you could adjust the length of the wire loop quite easily.

A similar method of suspension is used for some fluoerescent light fittings.

You may need to put a couple of wires horizontally to a wall to stop an swing (if its high enough)

And finally a local sign maker might be able to get the plastic laser cut to the former shapes, a lot easier than using a jigsaw.

Ps if I didnt explain myself very well just let me know :)

Try this method.  Its wire shelving from Menards, Loewes or Home Depot.

Andre,

Nicely done.

Threaded rod and steel L brackets would work and be the strongest. Whatever method, ensure there's a good "bite" into the studs or ceiling joists.

Thanks John, Andre & FJ&G,

all great ideas and help... I suppose trial and error will produce my best results with this project, unfortunatly the wire shelving will be an issue, reducing the head room.  I'll have to shoot for the high strength fishing line!

Have a good day!

Is the train g gauge ? I have a wood track suspension system made of Oak and will hang from the wall or from the ceiling.
What is your Budget? and what is the size of the room you are looking to install it in.
