I use an MRC 20 outdoors, keep it in a shed with telephone cable running underground to control stand. I smoked this unit 2 times when I was using it inside for HO. Had to send it back 2 times. The repair was reasonable ( about $10 ) What kills you is the shipping charge..... Both ways. as you know it's very heavy. Had to enclose a check for  $32  plus foot the bill to ship it to them (about $20 ) .

They won't sell you the part you need, The PC board was burned & they could have sent one for  $2 but that's not thier policy. Also it took about 2 months to get it back, probably would have been longer if I didn't call a few times. Seems they only have 1 repair man & he is also a rep. at train shows. so repair isn't a real priority. I think they are probably more interested in DCC.  Hope it doesn't take 2 months to replace a bad decoder!!    Jerry

Hmm. Contact MRC. They're a quality outfit and will take care of this.

Most likely causes are output transistor shorted, or adjustment pot is open for this unit to go to maximum output.

After reading the instructions again I picked up on something. When connecting an Amp-meter to the transformer is stated to use one with a range of 0 - 6 amps......That gives me a good idea....

thanks everyone, have a dry weekend (if you're on the east coast!!)

May have to secure my GRR for predicted high winds..

I have one of these too, not sure what happened, but now it just sends the max power to the track all the time, no matter what.  once i turn it on, bam! the train will shoot off at max speed.

I had to yank it out of operation.  I am not sure what to do with it now.

nice unit when it worked.  I would love to have it working again.

I had one teacher who remembed Ohm's Law as VCR.  Wrong letters, but the math worked.  It took something everyone (at the time) was familiar with and applied it to something they weren't.

My dad taught electronics for many years. He had an illustration like this:

Everyone thanks for the replies. I already have this controller and Mode I is for G-Scale. I was reading up on this forum, Aristo forum and MyLargeScale.Com forum i regards to transformers.

It sounds like most people have 10amp transformers....I was just wondering how many amps mine has because the box and instructions didn't indicate.

I have my OHMS law chart in the garage to figure this stuff out, it's been many years since I had an electronics class.

The MRC works fine on my GRR, I was just wondering...

thanks

Dan,

This unit is for either HO, N, or G. The end of the box says Mode I Output: 0-20VDC, 16VAC. Mode II Output: 0-16VDC 80VA Max, 16VAC, Total output:100VA. I assume Mode I is HO and Mode II is G. Hope this helps.

Check the link below.  Although they mention 100 VA (VA is watts in a resistive circuit), that includes the output of the AC terminals so it IS a TOTAL output.  At another site the DC output is rated about 70 VA

4 Amps at 18 Volts would be 72 voltamps

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 2:08 PM

I have the MRC Control Master 20 and can't find enough information to determine the total output....i.e. watts, amperage?

Does anyone have a clue??

thanks
