kids and trains

A couple of neighbor kids (about age 8 & 9 I'm guessing), asked me about my garden RR, which is visible to one or 2 houses in back). I told them they could see it and they jumped the 4 foot fence. I am in need of a couple of batteries so I let them push a die-cast car across the trestles instead. They had fun for an hour or more pushing it and the other kid would catch it and push it. They liked the stream and wondered if the trees were fake (esp. the Alberta Spruce).

Tomorrow, I'll run the steam locomotive and let them take the controls.

I think my live steamer kit that comes in the mail today will draw a crowd! I have no problem with kids taking the throttle and running the trains.

I had a video somewhere. Alas, I think it was on the late, lamented notebook. It was a little live steamer on a snowy day. You could hear all the neighborhood kids cheering it on.

Our generation looks fondly back at Hudsons, Pacifics, and RS-3's.  These kids will look fondly back at the SD-90MAC and Acela.  Strikes me as funny in an abstract sort of way.  Still, it's good to know that there will still be some people in the hobby when I'm older (and greyer).

Children love trians. The problem is that if the interest isn't nurtured they will lose interest. This usually happens at around 6 or 7 years old. We all need to share our toys with them as often and as frequently as possible!
