DPDT switches are sold in make before break and break before make for the contacts.

In using switches for a rail road, the break before make are needed when dealing with the trackside TE's.

Best bet might be a DPDT center off switch.

This information should be in the spec sheet from the manufacturer.

Of course a switch or relay on the fritz can cause a short when least expected.  This  is why the separate power pack is the only way to guarantee not shorting out the TE controllers.

Just to be sure, you are using the Trackside system? The power supply goes to the trackside unit, and then to the rails? No changes to the locos?

If so, NO NO NO.... you will nuke one or both of the trackside units as soon as one reverses direction.

If you are using the system for HO, then that does work differently, with a small receiver in each loco, and you can use multiple locos on the same track. You only need one transmitter.

NO NO NO do not use a double pole switch, if one pole did not clear properly you will get a short and they are costly IE new control or loco moter

I would think if you put a double pole, double throw switch in you should. That way it will keep the track power separate.

If two receivers are on the same track feed, then if one is forward  and the other is reverse then the mosfets can be blown.  Do not go there!!!

In fact, it is suggested that you do not just insulate tracks between receivers, but install a length of isolated track (block section) and just switch power to the block from either mainline.

Also, it is suggested that each receiver have a separate power supply if you do not use this block method.

 I model in HO and am using the Crest system.I have two separate layouts connected with a trestle.There are insulaters between each layout.Also on each layout there are industrial areas and so forth.Each layout has it's own power pack and receiver.The industial areas and yard are controlled by a third power pack with it's own receiver.

The question I have is----comming out of the yard,I have a drill track that I would like to control with one of the other receivers.Can there be two receivers wired to the same track?

Two different frequencies?

Right now the drill track is controlled by it's own receiver.

I like the Crest system because it allows you follow the trains,and not go running back to the main control panel.
