Northern Pacific Colors
Posted by datsmar on Thursday, July 13, 2006 9:28 AM

I am trying to paint a couple of passenger cars in the Northern Pacific (Lowery) green tones. Does anyone have a brand or mixing formula that will come close to these greens. I can't seem to find any pre-mixed colors.

Thanks, the tranz chart is great. By giving the RGB number I can feed that into Corel Draw and printout a color sample on my laser printer and take it down to the local paint store for a match. Should be close.

I had e-mailed Floquil/Testors on these colors and today I received a note from Jim Wiggin the Floquel Manager. He said to mix the following:

NP Dark Green:  4 parts Dark Green #F110040
                          3 parts Pullman Green #F110045
                          1 part Dark Blue #F110050

NP Light Green:  2 parts Light Green #F110041
                           1 part Engine Black #F110010
                           1 part Caboose Red #F110020

The Badger Model-Flex paint line has a NP LT Green (see #16-77 in the reference below), that really seems to match the NP dark green.

Also I seem to recall that Scalecoat made an NP Dark Green #61 and and NP light green (don't know the number), but I don't know if those were the Loewy greens or not.

I hadn't thought about the Model-flex paints, you are right it appears to be the darker green. I have never have used the Scalecoat before the other day and at first didn't like the way it went on. I thinned it way down and it seemed to work well that way. I don't like the gloss finish but works well with the decals. I sprayed a matte finish and it came out looking good. I just may have to try the Scalecoat NP colors if the Floquil don't come out right. Right now I working on painting the Bachman "Jackson" observation car in the GN green and orange and its looking good so far. After I finish a coach and baggage car I thought about doing a NP set of cars in light and dark greens.

I bought a custom painted N car on EBay recently and liked the colors so much that I asked the man who painted it.  Shawn Varner said that the correct colors for the model he painted were "Scale Coat II NP Lowey Green, Light Green and Dark Green."

I just ordered some Scalecoat II for one of my Aristo cars. It comes in the dark green and the light green. I'll have to let you know later how it matches up.
