Friend of mine has one and the sound is good although he's not used the smoke as he's already dropped oil all over the carpet with another engine!
The track does need to be stable as this is very heavy and you won't want to have to repaint it if it takes a dive off the track. When my friend tested his on the floor the track wasn't supported well over the door step and it lost contact with 9 coaches on, sparked and drew enough current to zap a small pit in one of the tyres on a driver.
Good loco but needs a proper road bed, it rides well over rough track but beware the consequences as above.

I cannot answer the first part of your question.
But the second part answer
Is your track needs to be very stable for all large scale trains nearly all of them are heavy.
Just like other scales unstable track will put the train in the dirt or onto the floor not a good thing and with ours the breakages are more expencive to fix.

has anyone had problems with this loco, hows the smoke and sound ? also how stable does the track need to be for this heavy loco? thanks for your reply! scott
