I wired 2 9.6 volt packs in series, and then added a 3 wire cable and used 2 chargers in series to recharge them. Each charger feeds each battery, only 3 wires needed to do this.

Dave,
The Triton charger is one of the best on the market....also one of the more expensive ones. Usually can find one around $100-120. However, it gets its power from a 12V source and is commonly used by people who want to recharge batteries from their car battery. Its strong point is that it is programable and can charge a wide range of voltages and battery types. I use a Radio Shack power supply to power mine (I have 2)

If I make up two 9.2 volt battery packs to put in the tender of my Shay, (as recommended) I do not want to keep taking them out to recharge them. I see that you can get charger jacks to build into the tender, but I can not find a battery charger which will charge 18 volts. How do folk get over this, I cant believe it is a new problem?
