LGB GE4/4 II MTS help needed
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 2:11 PM
Has anyone successfully fitted decoders to the above loco. I tried fitting two decoders to the loco....following the instructions but it didnt function correctly (ie additional functions not working....pantograph raise lower, etc). I am running on a Lenz system ant thought it may be down to a conflict between 14 speed step decoder and 28 step controller....but reconfiguring the relevant CV on the decoders didnt make any difference.....has anyone any ideas?

Any help grateully received.

I had a lot of trouble getting the decoders to work on an LGB GE4/4 II. Here are a few things to consider:
- Make sure you have matching 55021 Decoders (version 2.5). Make sure you open the box and check the revision number on the decoder before you buy it. LGB has shipped different versions under the same part number.
- You will need a decoder interface cable (55026) if you engine does not have the decoder direct sticker on the bottom. This cable connects between the pins on the back side of one of the decoders and the male plug on the circuit board in the engine. Without this, the engines will still run, but the panotgraphs will not work.
- The back EMF funtion, only available on the 55021 decoders, is a must if you are running on short radius (R1) track. This eliminates slow down in the turns anf makes all the difference. IF you are using 55020 decoders, return them for 55021's.
- I can make pictures of my decoder installation available if you provide an e-mail address. I got a lot of help from Davis Trains in Milford, OH (www.davistrains.com). They know the MTS system inside and out. Even when you follow the instructions, it does not always work.

Listen mate the best guru on this forum to do with fitting decoders to locos is Troy Betts in England, he's done quite a few and he has had some success.

If you are trying to follow LGB instructions I feel sorry for you.

M/S Santa gave me tender for Christmas and now several dys later it still won't work and I am confused as to wether it has decoder in or or not.

I'm off just about right now Down to an LGB dealer in Brisbane to try to get it to work

You may recall my experience with an LGB track cleaning loco, where i ended up successfully taking my LGB dealer to court. And I can tell you the instrctions are so bad you will never lose a court case against them.
