Kevin,
Thanks for the pictures. You have done a really good job of staying in era. The ballasting looks great and so do the trees [at least in these photos] . I lost two trees this winter also.[xx(]
Jim C.

PS. I got my GR Tuesday.[:D]

Well i hope this is OK, one of the mag I get is CTC Board.
lots of photos and not to many adds.
Its alittle more $$ but i'd love to see a GRR mag be like it.
BTY
The newest Book by Pat and Marc is meeting our need for a "great model RRs" like the MR has.
I'm very pleased to see it come out.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

good Q, matthew; I'd kick in an xtra $20 but my understanding, from working for 30 plus years in the mag and newspaper industry is that most revenue comes from ads. I think monthly would be nice, possible, profitable.

Got my Garden Railways mag end of April, can't remember exactly when. One of the many perks of living over here.

The mag is really a good read. Rather a lot of comercials, which leads me to wonder why the mag is only bi-monthly. Surely there is enough articles and such to be able to produce a mag. monthly.

See my new post for more.

Torby,
I've got the same problem. I swear they read my GRR and my wife’s Entertainment Weekly before they deliver them. We don’t get the EW until Thursday (a lot of good that does) and usually don’t see the GRR for at least a week after everyone else. Just thought it was our mail person…[:(!]

Maybe you should condsider giving the mailman his own subscription as a Christmas gratuity. [^][^]

The 2nd and 3rd photos are priceless. My Alberta Spruces have not been faring well either. We had an extremely dry spring in Virginia; actually, in past few years we haven't had much rain year-round. I was always told to not water the trees to keep them small; but I guess they sometimes need a drink.

------

With such a great June issue, I wonder sometimes about the reticence of folks on this forum. Perhaps they're too busy outside in the garden [:D]

Kevin, my grandfather a arborist by trade told me many years ago, if the winter dry, water your evergreens in the winter. Evergreeens like more water than people think. If the needles feel dry it needs water. Water it with cold water in the winter as to not shock the plant even if it ends up freezing most of it, it will get to the plant eventually.

Good Lord! Me dancing? Peri***he thought. And my legs weren't shaved, they're just so pale that Marty was temporarily blinded. He wore his sunglasses inside from that point forward[:D]

Jim, no pics of the party, but here are some shots of the railroad taken last fall shortly after the golden spike was driven.

Daily passenger/mail service leaving Neelyton

Heading west to Shade Gap

Passing the Shade Gap depot

Returning eastbound from Blacklog

Daily freight leaving Neelyton

Leaving Shade Gap towards Blacklog

For those who haven't received your copy of the magazine yet, Rene has posted a downloadable .pdf illustration showing the track plan.

Dave... I didn't mention the trains in the plans I sent to the HOA, only the landscaping. That's all they need worry about. So long as the landscaping didn't back water up against the house or in the neighbors' yards, they're pretty accommodating. (Picking a color for the house, on the other hand...) The neighbors all know about the trains, though I don't have working sound systems in any of my locos (beyond the quiet chuff of my live steamers.) To be perfectly honest, I don't miss the sound.

The white stuff is actually watermarks from the now-defunct sprinkler system. I'll be installing a new system this summer to handle both the yard and the plants in the garden.

Marty... TOFC - Trailer on Flat Car.

As for kids, we had a birthday party for Allison last weekend, with kids ranging from 3 to 9 running loose with the trains in the back yard. Boy was that an eye-opening experience![:O] I'll be ordering a Playmobil set in short order, and reworking access paths so kids can follow the train around the yard without destroying the railroad in the process. Scale models and party favors don't necessarily mix.

The plan is to keep this one. The last one was built in Marc's side yard specifically for that series. We have no plans on moving in the near future, so this one should exist for a while.

Kevin, you lost me on the TOFC stuff???
But keep in mind , my first two GRRs was built by Tonka.. So I undertand the little ones.
My youngest is 14 now.
Believe me, enjoy it while their young.
I hope you plan to keep this RR. The last one you wrote about was taken up before the first artical came out.
Keep us posted.

I got my magazine Saturday and it keeps getting better and better (wi***hey were monthly!).

Kevin,

Do your neighbors and the HOA realize there will be loud tooting sounds coming from 1911 era steam trains? [:D]

Also, what's that white stuff on your fence?

QUOTE: Is there a place where you can run the trains in and out of the house so you don't have to carrie them in?

I wish. Unfortunately the elevation and lay of the land makes that rather difficult to do without cutting a large hole in concrete walls of the basement, as I'd have to go through at less than a perpendicular angle. Then, there's the track's impact on our plans to fini***he basement.

Fortunately, the railroad is "designed" to be operated with only 14 cars, so carrying them out two or three at a time from the basement isn't terribly time consuming. I've also got the locos and a string of cars on display in the family room, so if I want to run something quick for company or when doing yard work, it's literally right out the door to the railroad. With a 5-month old, I think that's probably the closest I'm going to get to "operating session" for a while, anyway.

And I'm sure--with some effort--I could work a TOFC facility in there just for you, Marty. [;)]

I got to sit down and read kevins artical last night. Looks like a good track plan,, for narrow gauge. heheheh. But It could be used as a modern mainline also.
My only thought is: Is there a place where you can run the trains in and out of the house so you don't have to carrie them in?
This helps you to run more often.
Keeping maintance of the yard in mind really is important. I learned that the hard way.

I have not chated with Friedhelm for a long while.
I guess we are all busy.
Eric is working on so many projects I don't know which one will be done first.
He was here a few weeks ago and cut many things up on my saws. I think two are back together and being detailed.
I think Jens was suppose to have something small in this issue but I have not found it.[:(]

Marty,

Eric also has an article with pictures on the proto in the GBp3/06 issue. Have to see if I can get the original from Friedhelm so I don't have to "reverse engineer" errrrr I mean re-translate the translation.

When you compare the pictures of the proto with the model things are quite plain.

Hi Marty,

Read this http://www.easternmountainmodels.com/pdf/3_06_Genesis.pdf and you will learn that the length is approx. 1:29, the width is 1:27.6 and the height is 1:25.5 etc. etc.

OTOH Marc's first sentence in regards to the LGB item is
QUOTE: The model is very much LGB in character
; I heartily agree
