Yes John the mallet will pull 7 small carriages up a 4 % grade with an R3 curve but it struggles onan R2 curve same gradient, the problem is slippage.

The Crocodile pulling 3 Golden Mountain coaches is another thing but don't forget these are massive units over 700 mm long, with 4 axles, full of detail luxurious seating, toilets; many passengers including two spies. incredible lighting, they cost me over A$600 each.

I don't see why a power tender could not be added as long as its a red one.
I think I would look at loco weight as well a crocodile or a mallet sliping on 4% with a short train dosen't seem quite right.
yes its a French import to the UK which is somewhat unusual.

My frank s use to slip a lot, but the weight helps considerably, and i mean really really well, never slips now at all.[8D]

Gentlemen;

My problem is not to do with pulling power LGB loco's have plenty of that; no its to do with traction on a 4 % grade. Even my beastly Mallet and Crocodile tend to slip when pulling anything but the lightest load in this environment. Don't forget i live near the ocean and a big grade combined with tightish curve will worry the best of them. The Mallet will pull 6 small carriages but sometimes not 7 and the Crocodile will pull 3 big golden mountain coaches but not with the addition of a baggage car, under these circumstances.

So i am going to add a powered tender to my big Sachsen, to improve its traction, it can only pull 4 small coaches and 5 on a good day. So if i buy a new loco i would like to have some idea as to what it can do as far as traction is concerned. Even my ICE train doesn't like this situation and i have put guggle wheels on it and it has helped a lot.

I have a lgb 22261 frank s with powered tender, average puller on it's own, but i added 600grams of weight to loco and 600 to tender, WOW! It pulls like heck![:D]

Cambrai is a french loco, but worked on one of the Ironstone industrial systems in the Midlands. Diesels from european manufaturers were quite common in the UK but Steam was generally from UK builders as we had so many. If you want simple kits on a built chassis for UK locos see the www.grsuk.com website. Live steam ready to run sections to drool over as well. Lots of UK ready to run UK stock coming from accucraft UK as well, they've released a 060 Baugeley diesel and some stock already under the BMS range.

It's the guys who want to "maximize" their earnings by producing yet one more repaint with little regard as to what the proto looks like.

OTOH we have to accept that LGB produces toys, anytime they produce a model it is perhaps a close approximation. Scale and fidelety to prototype is completely secondary, as Ian mentioned

Hey, it fits right in with the rest of the line.

I did a conversion as the guy liked it.

I certainly liked it better than the other 6-drivered tanks.

If the gearing is the same, probably you could use a powered tender.

They have a big weight in them (like the 2085), and pulling did not seem to be an issue.

Most folks that I do work for want the ability to run "light", and that includes lights, so we ordered out a pair of 2085 lights, mounted them on the black lower end beam.

While not true to the prototype photos, it still looks good.

I wonder, too, if the red rods are an affliction of museum display.....

What about if i get a red powered tender; do you think that would look ok, this will haandle the reversing light problem.. I need a lot of grunt for my 4 % grades and R3 curves. This would not be as powerful as my Sachsen and it wont do a lot on that part of my layout, about equal to my Stainz with a poweree tender.

I really don't care about attention to detail, nor do i care about scale. i like it because it is 0 - 6 - 0 and its red. But everything i own has sound and must have LGB ability in curves, have a fair bit of guts and must work 100 % off MTS.

I suppose headlights at all is non-prototypical......the prototyp tanks come to the front of the smoke box.......and the angled back plate is straight on the proto......

The proto doesn't appear to have anything sticking out of the cab roof.

Very interesting cab sides.........


Like the Vargas drawings, sometimes better than the real thing......

I like it, inaccuracies and all! A little paint will fix up the valve train.......................... Hmmm, it's got a very "English" feel to it, not bad, not scale, but not bad. I wonder how it would look in Dixie D SL colors..........................

There's been a fair amount of discussion of it over on G Scale Mad ( www.gscalemad.co.uk ). General feeling seems to be that it's not a bad loco despite the inaccuracies. Not one for the purists, but if you like it go for it!

Ian,

Dave Goodson has plenty of worthwhile things to write and say. If you recognize that on sight or when you hear it, is a completely different matter.

Well Curmudgeon you have finally said something worthwhile that was a very interesting comment about no reversing lights i will look right into it. Where did you get yours from? is it LGB? are you happy with it?

I see LGB have released a new loco or it has only come to my attention recently. I am thinking of buying one and wondered if anyone ahs any idea of anything much about them. That is the real thing or the LGB model or any other model of this loco.

I want to get one for the following reasons and some my think its not much but there youare. (A) No one else i know has one, (B) it is an 0-6-0 configuration and i want something smaller but than my big boys but nbot 0-4-0 i have enough of them. (C) Its red in colour and i don't have a red loco. By the way does anyone know if is it really red, i have seen a picture of it in orange but LGB shows it as red? Is it really a French Loco?

What about the idea that it is already has an MTS decoder and i was thinking of buying it from Ridge Road Station getting a Phoenix sound system fitted (I have enough LGB sound); and also purchasing a red powered tender to go with it to help cope with my 4 % gradients and curves.

What does everyone think? is this a worthwhile project, as you can see it needs top be thought out and researched properly before you start. Are my motives reasonable?
