Is it possible to paint or chemically blacken side rods and other running gear on a loco, without disassembling it? I'm afraid if I ever managed to get it apart I'd never get it put back together right.

Try using a product called "Blacken it" or gun blueing found at sporting good stores.

Can that be used with the rods in place on the loco?

Ray, yes if use a paint brush and have a some what steady hand. Allow enough time to dry though before handling. I'm thinking Blacken it is for brass only though. But the gun blueing you can do several coats.
Good luck![:)]
