Thanks HJ, the trade advice over in the Uk are a bit vague on these things, finally found digitrains who were prepared to find out for definite and they'll be getting the custom as a result.
Do you have any suggestions for trimming CV's? I'll be investigating the sound option as well.

Those nice people at ZIMO have been producing decoders that can handle plenty of umph for some time.
And to up the ante they also were the first to introduce decoders that could process the arcane MTS serial commands - in the meantime superceded by the parallel version, which behaves more like most other decoders.
I don't have the need for it, but if I recall correctly ZIMO also has a decoder interface that lets you use the sound portion of the MTS onboard set-up without using the "still not so wonderful" onboard decoder.
BTW for the real power hogs there is the Heller HE11 http://www.heller-modellbahn.de/he11.htm which handles 10A using a heat sink. [;)][:)][;)]

BTW since MTS only handles 14 speed steps - plus a fudged 28 variety - and has a few other "short comings", ZIMO decoders have a lot of features which the MTS control can't utilize. [;)][:)][;)] But one can trim the CVs to get excellent running characteristics, even with those "short comings". [;)][:)][;)]
