Short and sweet and to the point.

I have a bachmann 4-6-0 and Ruby that I would like to convert to battery and Rc. So far I have not seen a simple shopping list in any one spot that says you need this and this and this. I know there are various systems available and many options, But as many of us are, we don't have the funds. So I will put out here a request. Being on a limited budget (read that 3 kids) What is my shopping list to get my 4-6-0 on battery and RC cheaply? Anyone want to tackle Ruby? I can post that on the live steam forum later if not.

Thanks

HI Greg.

As there are so many variables in going with battery R/C there is no simple "one size fits all" solution.

The lowest cost way of doing it for you will be to use an AM stick type R/C with servos for the Ruby. To save buying two different types of R/C systems you can utilise the same R/C equipment with an extra receiver and Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) instead of the servos for the Big Hauler.

The stick type Digital Proportional R/C systems have very long range.
The trade off is that the TX handcontroller is biggish but cheap compared to the much smaller but more expensive proprietary handpieces dedicated to controlling LS trains. Plus, they flatten batteries quite quickly so re-chargeables in the stick type transmitter are desirable.

You have to work out what it is you need first by asking questions.
Once you have done that deciding what to get becomes much simpler.

You only get what you pay for in R/C. Low cost systems do have drawbacks but can be made to work well.

Best wishes,

Tony Walsham

Thanks Tony,
I was just reading the post "What battery power do you use" and saw your list of questions. Mine are fairly simple. Only me running the trains. 24x24 loop. No switching at this time. I really only need fast, slow, stop operations. Since I just moved last Oct., the new layout area is quite a distance from the house (150' +/-)and
just don't want to hassle with running extension cords or installing permanent service wire that great of a distance. I was just hoping someone out there had a cheap shopping list of what I needed. I'll come up with something. I made my own track so, I'll figure it out.

Where in IA are you, or more specifically have you looked into one of the various local clubs. CIGRS haves several members which sell and/or install 3-4 different systems, and most members use one (or several) of different systems, if you would like a 1st hand look at much of what is available. Some is installed in live steam (dont know what as they didnt bring that to the last meeting as it was inside). You can visit for free to a meeting to findout about it.
Sorry I am not answering your question as if you look you'll see I am a Newbie, and have asked a bunch of questions myself trying to determine what is best for me. Just thought this might help as reading helps you so far, but seeing takes you annother step -or at least in my case.
Good luck.

Eric,
Thanks, I am a member of CVGRS in Cedar Rapids only about a year now and
don't know that many people yet in the club that are into battery/radio control.

If you get over this way during the Home & Garden show here in DSM (I believe the weekend of the march 17-19-but do double check that) we will be there. I am sure on sunday (if not on all the days) mult members will be there with diff systems
