I have had a lot of trouble starting up with LGB MTS, however i am now convinced it was the people not the equipment; and LGB instruction are just about impossible to understand. Havent had any trouble with MTS for 2 years.

But however; i am now going places with my MTS and track contacts that i had never even considered and I am very pleased to be able to do so.

Whatever you pick look long and hard at what you hope to achieve in the future, as if you pick the wrong one you will regret it and will come to dead end and may have to start over. ie think about the future as much as you are about "now".

My big interest is in operating track components rather than the locos themselves; as the MTS will do this better for you that you can do yourself. So once started the loco will look after itself except crashes and stuff like that.

I operate switches all the time and my MTS reversing loops are such a joy, you cannot comprehend until you have them, one is ok but two in opposite directions to the main loop will give your layout a versatility you can not understand until you have it.

It is ok to have your locos going round a circuit ad nauseum, but with reversing loops they disappear into a tunnel or a jungle such as i have and reappear going in the opposite direction and this is a real buzz for me.

I am working on, can you imagine a figure 8 with three circles instead of 2 and that is what i have and with MTS and reversing loops and track contacts i will have my locos automatically going around all three in opposite directions all the time with no interference from me. Very interesting and with a lot of variety!

In this i do not use my second circuit in area 3 but if i connect area 3 up to the middle of the reversing loop in area 1 by an ELL, it will make the layout more interesting by a factor of 4.

To actually answer your question, the 5 amp Super Chief goes for around $320 at Standard Hobby (last check they are out of stock however.) NCE is a bit pricier, but Micro Mark USED to have the Power Pro for $329. Not sure if they will restock it again or not.

I recommend ZIMO,

By far the most features i.e. bang for the buck!

Components can be software updated - this includes the newest series of decoders!!! - which means no obsolescence! The updates are downloaded from the internet and are FREE of charge.

The ZIMO large scale decoders are by far the most advanced with the best features. There are many, many large scalers who use the ZIMO decoders even if they use a different mfg's system.

Another very good feature is the built-in voltage stabilization in the ZIMO system which can be adjusted to be used from N scale to Large scale. Some of the other systems don't deliver enough umph or (more deadly) too much umph and fry decoders in the process.

Digitrax is a nice system.

The thread title is Recommended DCC.

I recommend NCE, mostly because of the great controllers, and the swiftness of new features and bug fixes.

I don't use transponding, so NCE fills the bill best for me.
