Mason-Bogey
Posted by grandpopswalt on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 1:02 PM
Just visited the Henry Ford Museum at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. a couple days ago, great place! They have a restored Mason-Bogey 0-6-4T pulling their open passenger coaches around the grounds. It looks as though the B'mann 2-6-0 "Indy" Mogul could be used as a starting point for a kitba***o come up with a respectable model of the Mason-Bogey. We're still on the road but I'll get into this as soon as we get home to see if this kitbash will work.

Scott,

Thanks for the information. I'm sure that all of this material will go a long way towards making this a successful venture.

Walt,
if the standard gauge 0-6-4T like the Torch Lake at Michigan is the loco you're wanting to build, then a 1:29 scale loco is possible using the simple Lionel 0-6-0T chassis.

The bonus on the Lionel 0-6-0 is that the wheels are tightly packed like a Mason, and the vertical motor between middle and rear driver forms a perfect pivot. The Indy wheels are spaced futher apart.

Here are a couple of Masons built from $10 Lionel 0-6-0T chassis:

This 2nd Mason is the Torch Lake you were interested in, built atop a Lionel 0-6-0T.

Also note when using Lionel blocks, its best to replace the side rods with metal, and drop remove the cogs between the drivers..makes for a much smoother runner, very robust.

Fletch,

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Do you happen to know the model number of the Lionel 0-6-0T you are referring to?

Any of the Lionel 0-6-0Ts will do. I used a Christmas loco on one, and a D&RG on the other. The only Lionel 0-6-0T that you should not use are the Thomas ones.

Go to Ebay and type in 'Lionel' in the search area under ' G gauge' - it will bring up a number of these 0-6-0s.
any of them that look like this in shape are the right ones:

Doesn't matter what colour scheme!

Hi Walt, just a heads up, Planning on doing this also but I ran my little 060 this weekend and it's a POS!

Poor electrical pickup , so plan on wiring the rear truck and if you add a pilot wheel might as well wire it up too. You will need all the pick up points you can get with this one.

Hi Vic,

Thanks for the heads up but I'm going to set this one for battery/RC. BTW, is the running gear on the Lionel 0-6-0 metal or plated plastic? And where did you get yours, new or e-bay? how much?

Walt

Mine is like new, I got it at one one the LS shops out here. He was selling it for someone clearing old stuff out, payed $40 for it. Siderods on mine are metal (I think?) but pushrods are plastic and the wheel rims are brass. Thats part of the power problem, they need to be really clean or poor pick up occurs. If your going to use battery then pick up will not be an issue. I'm going to plan on adding power pickups at the rear truck but thats not till sometime next year, got too many things to finish first.

Thanks Vic - I'm also going look into using the B'mann "Indy" as the basis for this kitbash even though the wheel spacing is a little too large.

Check out these websites for more info on the Mason-Bogey.

The Lionel 0-6-0 is a great performer if you wire in the pilot and rear trucks in. I've never needed to clean the wheels on the 2-6-6T as it cleans itself at the same rate as the wheels get dirty. The pic-up load is spread.

The original rods I never used, they are plated plastic, and too chunky. I made new ones using K&S brass.
