Railroad to Operate Again

By: Jim Scholvich

On Tuesday, October 11, the announcement was made that the Boulder Creek & Western Railroad will be operating once again, after not being used for 7 years after the original owner, Steve Valdevia passed away. The railroad declared bankruptcy soon after, but never applied for abandonment. Instead, it was put up for sale about 3 months ago by a private party. On October 4th, the railroad was purchased by big shortline railroad owner, Matthew Starman, who has recently purchased the Glenn County Railroad in Orland, California after being abandoned for 2 years. Starman has big plans for our narrow gauge railroad and how to get it back on its feet. These plans include complete rebuilding of the line, refurbishing the depot, building a brand new locomotive service and storage area, replacing the old one that burnt down about 2 years ago, and extending the line to "Steve's Junction" at Redding where Starman says there will be a "dual-gauge" interchange with the Union Pacific Railroad. "Hopefully this will increase both freight and passenger revenue as well" Starman commented. The company has made a bold move; to use original BC&W equipment. Thats right, we are talking steam engines, wooden coaches and freight cars. Of course there will be a narrow gauge diesel or two to help out.

Fortunately, there is some equipment left over from the original railroad. This includes a 4-6-0 "ten Wheeler", a box car, flat car, combine, and a caboose. This train will be used first to rebuild the line. Then it will enter mainline service. Matthew also said that with the grants his company has received and the enthusiasm that the town has, the railroad will be a huge success.

The "#12", the combine, and caboose ready to go out for an inspection run around the west end of the railroad.
