Knuckle couplers
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 22, 2005 12:54 PM
I'm new at this. I have Bachmann rolling stock and loco and just bought some used stuff with Aristo knuckle couplers. Can I change them to Bachmann? One had LGB and I changed it to a knuclke then found out they are not all the same..I think it is Aristo. The other one is a Delton which is the same as Aristo? gvtrainman

Instead of trying to juggle different brands of couplers, I change everything to Kadee body-mounted couplers. I believe Delton was bought by Aristo, so their couplers should be close to being the same, but whether or not they are compatible with Bachmann couplers is another matter. Switching everything to Bachmann couplers would probably work provided the shanks are the same, but in my experience every different brand of coupler has a different style of mounting hardware.

You could also standardize on Loop & Hook type couplers. Those are compatable between all brands.

With slight variations due to the different springs used by different mfgs!

If one likes the proto look of knuckle couplers and very smooth operation, one usually goes the Kadee route. Since they offer the largest selection of different configurations to adapt for almost any situation they are less work than some of the alternatives.
