School Departs Platform 1 in ten minutes
Posted by John Busby on Sunday, August 21, 2005 10:08 AM
Hi all
Have been reading a book on the local woodlines.
it mentions a mobile school literaly built in a passanger coach.
no further info of modeling use is given.
The era is the 30's and 40's any one got any ideas or know of
something like it in your area that would help put a convincing model together/
regards John

Could it have been a school for itinerant labor as farm workers or railroad construction workers? Perhaps perusal of those possibilities would give more info that you could use.

Hi Bob
It was at the main camp on the wood line so when the main camp moved it moved
aparently that was aprox every eight weeks.
The fire wood cutters had a lonely life at the head of the line if they where not married
and a pretty hard life by all acounts living in white washed hessian huts anything
up too a hundred miles away from my home town.
Which they kept the mine power stations and municipal power station and kitchen stoves in fuel , pit props for the mines, and some building timber.
Nothing in Rails Through The Bush which has a section on the Goldfields wood lines.
Plenty of pictures of wood moving trains but nothing on service stock like the school,
water tankers or stores vans not even the pay car.
But could use the one from the south west for that and take a reasonable stab at the water cars from other lines as all where similar to the Government ones probably bought from the government railway at some stage.
regards John.

You would have to understand where John comes from to understand this concept. You might get a hundred kids spread over 750 000 sq miles and you have to educate them some way. And provide medical stuff as well hence the Royal flying doctor service and the school of the air. The only other people besides Aussies that could hope to understand this are our mates the Canadians.
