I like the Capt's ideas for the series but I would move part three to one so as the viewer could see prototypes and the like to determine track plans and loco's based on what they've seen and enjoyed of the prototypes.

Divide your show into three...and eventually four parts...

Part I: Track and Structures...Show some incremental building and laying of track. This would be the section of the show for building the line. In fact I would call that segment...Building the Line! This includes electronics, wiring as well as laying tracks. You may have to build a layout that you will trace the evolution of.

Part II: The Trains...be sure to have a segment for trains reviews...kitbashings. Demonstrate the major issues needed in locomotives and rolling stock. Things like decals and the like.

Part III: Visit some Prototype Railroad for inspiriation...maybe local museums and depots and stuff.

Part IV: Layouts from fans...like the call in segment of a Radio Talkshow. This will have to wait untill you have an audience.

The intent of local access TV is to give local citizens an opportunity to share their hobbies, community projects, crafts, etc with their neighbors. If we were able to get something like this started, each group in our network would host it’s own show. The intent of these shows would be to present a video of a different club or layout from another city each week.

So Nathan, how’s your radio voice? ….. testing, testing, 1, 2, 3. BTW, Kevin Strong is a professional video editor/producer and could probably give a project like this a big boost.

If you’re interested in following up on this, give your local cable company’s public access manager a call to see how this idea is accepted in your neck of the woods.

I’ve just spent about 1/2 hour talking with the public access channel director at my local cable company. Here are a few interesting facts I'd like to share with you.

Most, probably all, cable companies have local access channels set aside for community use. This includes airtime, studio use, equipment use, training, etc, and it's all FREE. I described what our hobby is all about and my idea of having a weekly show where we would present videotape of various member's layouts or construction projects. This gentleman thinks that this would be a perfect subject for a weekly show and is very enthusiastic about helping us get started.

He say’s it will take about 5 or 6 people at each location to run the studio, make the presentation, etc (sounds like a perfect club project), and remember these skills will be taught to us for free. Obviously there are a hundred other details that need to be worked out, but it certainly sounds feasible to me. As I see it, the biggest challenge is having enough good quality content to be able to do 40 or 50 shows a year. That’s why we would need many groups working together and sharing their locally produced video.
