Help, suggestions on repainting RR Cars
Posted by crackerpete on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 11:26 AM
Greetings from Sunny, Hot 90 degree+++ Florida
I have accumalated several differant colored passenger cars. Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on the best method to repaint them? Or a website that would have this information available? Which spray paint works well, Anything to be concerned about taking them apart? Best method to remove lettering, etc.

Thanks for the help,
Cracker Pete

Hi crackerpete
Your biggest problem dissasembaling them will in all probabilaty be getting the glazing out in one piece.
Wa***he parts in warm soapy water rinse and thoroughly dry them repair any damadge done taking them apart hopefull you where carefull enough not to do any.
If the lettering is printed leave it spray paint the body parts with auto acrylic primer inside and out.
spray or thinly brush paint the inside of the coach in your chosen colour say light blue
or light green these two colours seem to be common??.
When dry the longer you leave it the better but at least 24 hrs mask off coach body.
so that no paint can go through window openings or top and bottom spray your coach in the chosen outside colour in thin light coats to buil up colour and make sure you have got the edges of the window openings.
At this point you can gloss varni***he outside coach in preperation for decals and decal it then seal the decals with iether satin shean or flat varni***o taste.
paint the seat and floor moulding this bit may be better done by hand add any passangers to the seats carpet the floors ect that you may wi***o do.
the roof moulding paint the inside with primer let dry then black let dry then light grey
let dry then two or three coats of white.
paint the outside black grey or white acording to choice not forgetting to mask off the inside to keep the white clean and over spray free.
follow this method through on all parts.
Don't know about US paints so cannot advise which is best brand ect
But do draw a diagram as you are taking it apart so you can get it back together again
once you have painted and added details to taste.
Knowing what brand the coaches are may help us to give better and more accurate advice.
Avoid yellow as an outside colour unless you are a real good painter
go instead for a dark railway like green or red it will be easier to get even colouring across the coach outside.
regards John

Hi Pete,
Check out Testors military colours. They are flat and in my opinion a very cost effective way to get realistic colours from a spray can. Coverage is good with them since they are made specifically for plastic. All the best with your project! Later eh...Brian.
