St Aubins Station, www.lgbpola.com , sells Hartland Macks for as low as $36, shipping adds to the overall cost but I just find these baby run and run, they are every bit as good and bulletproof as anything from LGB.

As for the K-line Geep, I saw one on wholesaletrains.com for sale, but I cant remember the price.

PS I did blow up my Scientific engine...for parts![:0][;)][:D]

Ian I know how you feel, I like blowing things up too, but i would never blow up a train even if it was a cheap toy like my loco. But thats ok I am kind of getting used to the sound now and the new paint looks awesome, well as awsome as regular black can get. I still have to paint some of the details like the bell and wheels which will be accented and I have some weathering to do.

I don't know anything abour youe loco mate; I just like blowing things up, sorry if you are dispitited.

I wouldn't topuch anything but LGB, the Bachmann I have seen in my opinion are just terrible as far as quality is concerned.

A few small well built and highly reliable LGB will be more value than all the rest put together, is what i think

Vic I have no choice but to use it for now. I simply cannot afford a new locomotive from any manufacturer. I cannot even afford an Aristocraft Lil Critter. I have repainted it but forgot to take before pictures but i will put some after pictures up soon. I have a scientific toys mogul that is much quieter but still has the noise I have repainted this too. I will just have to put up with them for a little while longer. About the HLW Mack. My LHS does not carry this and i do not know where to get one. Do you have a link to an on line dealer I could see. And one last thing...does anyone have one of those K-line GP's. In the 2004 first addition catolog they seam really cheap selling for only $100 while i know LGB and others sell them for alot more. Would buying one be just as bad as what i have right now? If it is a major step up i will save for one.

Its not anything against you personally, but many here , myself included, find New Bright stuff just deplorable in the quality of their products, this is based on first hand experience as most of us had one somewhere down the line. The battery op ones are by far the worse, the track powered ones are a bit better. I had a Scientific Toys loco that had that distinctive "Knive in the Disposal" motor sound, a hidious sound effects, and would derail at every switch, and being battery powered it just kept tractoring across the dirt until in piled up on something (that was actually pretty funny to watch [;)])

There are many who do like their New Bright, Echo, and Scientific locos just fine and think the rest of us are just crappy old so and so's. Thats OK with me, it all boils down to what YOU like, if you think the engine is funky and kinda cool then keep it, repaint it, have fun with it. Thats the whole point here, to have FUN, so do what you think you'll enjoyn the most. If your planning on expanding and using track power down the line, then I would still suggest an HLW Mack, its by far the best deal in large scale locomotives out there, $40 bucks is a STEAL in large scale. Anyway, just wanted to clarify that, Enjoy![:D]

Ok I finally have a plan I am going to paint it to get rid of the odd colors and it will balance out with the noise. Before the paint it is crapy toy noise maker, after the paint it is semi-scaled model with ambiance. I will be sure to post before and after shots.

I would suggest a Bachmann or Bubby-L, I have some "Sow's Ears" but they are mostly for the amusement of local children.

You could lay the track on a sound -deadening material such as homasote (did I even come close to spelling that right?). Or, whenever my car is making anoying noises, I turn up the volume on my stereo until I can't hear it any more.

New Bright is for a short run around the tree at Christmas time - don't plan anything long term for it.

The best way to avoid this noise is to never turn them on, Sorry, but that "fork in the disposal" sound is par for the course with New Bright engines. Is this a battery powered engine? If you're planning a track powered layout I would pick up a HLW Mack from St Aubins for about $40, its a way better engine and far quiter and smoother running unit.

Well the motor in the thing is rather loud. Is there any way to make it quieter? I am used to my HO trains running smooth and quiet and would like this with my G scale locos so i can build a garden railroad. Thanks for your help!
