Stray character in postings
Posted by CandCRR on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 11:52 AM
I have noticed today text I did not write cropping up in my postings. Things like "#8220" and "#8221" showed up in the last posting I made. What is it ? Is it because I am pasteing from a word processor?
Thanks,
Jaime

The smilie list won't transfer as far as I have tried coming from word.

Don't know about others experiences, but I post from word then add smilies and images etc...

By the way Jaime, [#welcome][#welcome] to the forum. Enjoy your stay. Stop by the coffee shop and say hello and introduce yourself.

Yeah, the system here isn't recognizing the code from your processor.

Thanks all,

I too have been using Word and pasting into the forum. I have no sense of spelling.

Is the forum topic "Okay, open Forum, off-topic, or whatever (grab a cup and sit) " the coffee shop you mentioned above when you said "Stop by the coffee shop and say hello and introduce yourself."??? The last few postings there do not sound that friendly. I know how a few can take the fun out of something.

Thank you, Jaime

I think it might be some of the censorship they have on this forum.

This is how the Nazi's got started.

Hey Ian,

[:(!][:(!] Not nice[:(!][:(!]

As far as I know this Forum (admin and mods) shows plenty of tolerance before things get yanked!!
It could simply be a result of the cut and paste routine or some other glitch.

How come I seen the subject "Stray Character in postings" and I seen the last post said "Curmudgeon" and I thought "that's about right" ?

Its back again, #8220;don#8217;t #8220; showed up in the posting but was not there when I did the Preview Reply. They seem to show up when I have typed dashes or apostrophes. If it does not bug you I will try to ignore it. Hopefully this will be the last from me about the stray characters that show up in my text.
Thank you, Jaime

Just a dumb question on Fool's Day: why would one write the post off-line, instead of in Reply or Quick Reply?

All indications are that we generally don't mind a few typos.

With quick reply:
My spelling is attretious and I have mild dislisia so it keeps me on the straight and nerrow.
Now after putting it through the Jaime translator.
My spelling is atrocious and I have mild dyslexia so it keeps me on the straight and narrow.

OK Jaime! I hear you.

OTOH I'm still puzzled. I do the editing for contributions to a mag, I ask people to submit "whatever" in TXT format. Forget about the RTF and other formatting, all it does is make things more complicated when they're imported into whichever layout program one is using. Soooooooooo I don't get it why NotePad would give you strange code when importing,

This is a test.

#8212; #8211; #732; #732; ü ä ß è

>>

The above is a test and as far as I can see it imports (copy/paste from TXT file) exactly as written. However it is possible that you have your keyboard set that it generates the "strange characters".

Hmmmmmmmmmmm yeah well jolly good! Now I see!

It is this board that does it. It interprets foreign language letters correctly but balks at em-dash, en-dash quotation marks etc. despite showing them correctly in pre-view!

Test 2

This is a test.

#8212; #8211; #732; #732; ü ä ß é

Lets see what this does, I designated the font as Times Roman since I know that the font contains the characters.

OK! Forget about em and en dash or the proper quotation marks!

I'm trying it from a different PC now. Hopefully there won’t stray characters. This is pasted from Word.

There are a few free spell checkers that can be used with web entry forms. I've been using IE Spell.
