weathering

Hey all,
I have a LGB porter that i would like to make look like i's old and used a lot. How do i do this?

yes just take out the valuable stuff and put it ouside in a damp place in the suna nd rain and snow for a wial and it will look weathered.

didn,t see you were in california i guess you dont get snow. And once its weathered put the valuables back in her.

OK the truth is that your going to have to learn a few things with a paint brush, I use rust paint, raw umber, burnt sienna, all the browns and rust colors you can find, i also use black and brown ink washes. ink diluted in rubbing alcohol, when applied in streakes and adds a grimy look when dries.


this engine was done only using bru***echnics.


The coaling tower uses all the above technics. It wasnt as hard as i thought, these were my first attempts to weather a loco and a building in large scale.

Vic,very good job. The 'coaling' tower looks like it has been around for a
few years.
I don't model in 'large' scale,so am not familiar with that particular building.
("O" scale is slightly smaller than the 'Garden' variety.)
But,what is the roof covering material? Looks great,would like to copy it![:)]

Locomutt, good to see you over here in the dirt , so to speak, hehehe.

Heres a link for the full story of the coaling tower, the roof is K&S Engineering "soft aluminum" sheets cut to size and rolled thru a paper pleater, its then painted using drybru***echnics with whatever mottled colors I have on hand, then washed with a ink/alcohol mix. Very much by eye but easier than I thought it would be.

Hi All,

Has anyone weathered in chalk? What's that like? How hard is it? I never have done it but was thinking about trying it. Thanks, Greg
