Running my train show finds from yesterday
Posted by emdmike on Sunday, April 4, 2021 6:04 PM

Went to the first train show yesterday since Covid shut down everything last spring.  Show was well attended, over 140 tables of every scale of train you can think of, even several tables of nothing but HO brass.  And this was a first time show in this venue at the Grant Co fairgrounds in Peru, IN.  Several tables of G scale with very good prices.  I bought this early production USA Trains Santa Fe GP38-2, with Phoenix "Big Sound" installed for $175 in its box, LGB BN hopper brand new in the box for $40, USA Trains UP coal hopper for $30 and the unboxed LGB NP box car for $15.   I spent this morning installing battery RC in the GP38-2 as my railway is dead rail.  I used a Spectrum DSM2 receiver that is compatable with my RCS palm size transmitter, then a electronic speed controler for RC cars.  Those early Phoenix sound boards have more limited controlablity compared to the current crop of boards.  The horn is a "canned" grade crossing sequence and the bell is timed for a limited duration.  So, for my use I will leave them on track magnet triggers.  The quality of the sound is very good considering its from back in the mid 1990's.  Phoneix was and still is the top shelf sound boards in G scale.  Enjoy the video!   Mike the Aspie

Nearly all the asking prices I saw on all scales of trains were really good.  Dealers were wanting to sell trains, that was for sure. I saw lots of full bags being carried out by show attendees. I had a great time, didnt spend as long there as I usually would pre Covid.  But spent enough time to buy want I wanted, visited with a few friends for a short period, then left and went trackside to watch trains for a bit.   Mike the Aspie

Sounds like a grand time was had at the show.

In the video I like how the dogs are familiar enough with the trains that it ain't no big thing to them.

Is that a Chessie SW-something peeking out of the egine house?

Yes it is.  Thats my wife's USA Chessie NW2 diesel.  It also has onboard battery squeezed under the hood.  Its not RC, just a center off, DPDT toggle switch for forwards and backwards operation.  Runs for a couple hours on a 8.4 volt, 5000mah RC car battery.   Our railway is a bit of a bash of European and USA trains.  As I have LGB Euro and USA items, Regner live steam Euro trams and a Pearse USA style 0-4-0 switcher with a slope back tender.  So we have USA train days and Euro train days depending on the mood.    Mike the Aspie

Neat! They're not reopening shows locally here until July, even then it will take some time for venue events to be scheduled. At least things are 'sort of' reopening.

   Have fun with your trains

Its defiantly going to be a state by state and location by location basis on shows restarting.  Hopefully things get better but some states are not looking good with a new surge starting with one of the mutations.  Gonna be a rough ride for awhile. It was good to atleast make it to one show.  Hopefully we have the event in Franklin, Indiana in a few weeks, our G scale live steam group is going to set up our portable layout at that event.     Mike the Aspie
