Not to sound to technical here, but a lockon is the thingee that attaches to the track via wires from the power pack and makes the choo-choo go round and round the tree.

For the last three years my wife wanted me to run the New Bright Holiday Express train around the tree. I have stated many times how i hated it. It was too fast and very noisy AND would derail all of the time. This year, the lockon broke and we had to look for a new source of motive power. Enter LGB!! I get to run my favorite trains all of the time. They run and run and RUN!! It's a good thing my wife broke the lockon or else she would have thought it was a conspiracy.
