Just wanted to get some ideas on what scale vehicles you guys think are the most appropriate. G is, of course 1/22 but are any other scale vehicles attractive in your experience. Am particularly interested in adding constructiion vehicles to my flatcars. Any input, as always, is appreciated.
Personally I think anything in between 1:32 and 1:20 works unless you are a stickler, remember the train is moving and it's 10' away, LOL a neat load I had for a while wasn't a vehicle but used electrician's flexible "blue smurf" a ridged 1/2" or 3/4" ridged conduit painted silver, looked like culvert pipe. I guess if you want to go down the road and buy loads USA Trains have generator sets that could be used
There are several manufacturers who produce large scale (1:24; 1:25) die cast vehicles including neat Chevy and Ford pick up trucks.
I've started looking for plastic toys based on construction vehicles that Little Johnny takes with him when he plays in the sand box. They offer all kinds of possibilities, be it weathering or adding details to give them a more realistic look, not to mention they all come with a Nice Price!
A beautiful model to consider putting on static display in front of your depot or city park is the Lionel large scale plastic model of The General, the Western & Atlantic 4-4-0 of Civil War fame.
Remember, Model Railroading is FUN, and that's the name of the game! I highly respect the rivet counting model railroaders and the beautiful and accurate scale models they build, but since I don't possess the skills that they were born with, just plan to operate what fits my fancy as long as the sizes are close enough of each other.

About diesel engine loads, besides the USA trains ones, there is the Caterpillar model range for example this one that you can find on their webshop:

According to the CAT webshop the generator set is currently out of stock. Are there any authorized dealers in the U.S. or Canada who promote and sell CAT products?
Trinity River Bottoms Boomer According to the CAT webshop the generator set is currently out of stock. Are there any authorized dealers in the U.S. or Canada who promote and sell CAT products?
Classic Construction Models sells CAT products. However, according to their website, the generator set is marked as "closed," so it may no longer be available.
