Yes, he did clean off the case. The camera was in a waterproof case. It cuts down on the sound level the camera can pick up, but since there is a pond within the length of my idiot cord, did not want to risk it.

Do not think the fireman saw the 'idiot cord' attaching the camera to a tent peg 20ft away. Learned a lesson 3 years ago with my first GoPro. Had it 'clamped' to a bridge to record the Durango and Silverton crossing. As I stood, nearly 100 yards away, I watched in horror as the camera fell to the river below. Since then I use 'idiot cords' on any camera in hazardous locations.
