Yes i too would love to own a Mogul just about the only American loco tht I would like to own.

However you can keep your Mikado's, nothing but trouble running them and they look very odd going around any normal bend. The ones I have seen also have alot of trouble with traction.

I was most gratified to hear about the second hand Mogul, I would like to just what buckeye did; buy a second hand one get, LGB to bring it up to scratch; add digital controls and sound and I agree WOW.

A question here, would ony one have any idea how high they are at the most above the tracks? Would they be higher than my Mallet which is 200 mm above the rails. I have many tunnels and underpasses in my area 3 and I wouldn't want to have to change the whole thing!

My wife and I purchased a used LGB C&S Mogul last year. It worked fairly good, but we sent it to LGB for a tune up and added a Sierra Sound system and all we can say now is, WOW!

We have less than $400 in to the engine and it is a great runner. I pulls anything and everything. The sound can blast out the neighbors. It smokes great, too. The tune up was very well worth the money.

I am still on the fence. if the older moguls are going for say $250, then the used one i know if isnt a deal. almost twice that is what he's asking. oh well. I guess i stay LGB free for a while longer.

I have the MRC control master 20 as my power source, if i get an LGB, i will/should get a different power supply correct?

Also in my delima, I havent decided on a scale yet. My wife and I have bachmann rolling stock, my son has the bachmann big hauler, and my wife has a 1:32 marklin. I have a Lionel 4-4-2 (which isnt running as of right now [:(]). If i get an LGB, i will stay with the 1:20 to match the rolling stock, but the LGB in my mind is a settle, I really want the USA B6 0-6-0. the problem there is the price, and the scale, 1:29. plus its not even released yet. 6 months according to USA co.

I like the mikato, but will it look odd pulling the 1:20 roling stock? since its actually 1:26 scale? or is it just so large that even though its a smaller scale, its still just as tall in inches?


hrmm...maybe i should just get the lionel running and see how much i like it, since i have never really run it on my track, i was testing it, and playing around and while i was doing so, the control master 20 that i had, went crazy and i think it may have fried the motor in the lionel. right now the lionel just sits there, hums and the lights are on, but no movement.

as i mentioned, I do have a new control master 20 in the scope for purchase, but if the LGB's cant run with that, then I guess i should cancel that order and get a LGB control power supply....those will run all the other makes right? i think i saw that in another post..

I have owned a 2019S since 1988. Back then the sound system was outstanding, since no other manufacturer in the Large Scale world had any sound locos.
Now, with the advent of digital sound, it doesn't sound that great.
I also own the Mike, purchased in 2001 when they first came out.
No problems with either one. I bought my first mogul in 1986, a 2019D, and except for occasional lubing, hasn't seen any repair either.
The mogul will look better on the R-1 curves. The Mike will work on those curves, but it's pretty tight on the articulating motor blocks.
Pays your money and take your choice.

I purchased an LGB Mogul (with sound and smoke) over 11years ago and have been very pleased with it. And this year bought another, but with the new sound and smoke unit. The two will not work in tandem as the old one will start as soon as the voltage over rides friction but the new one sits until the decoder says it's okay to move but it's running much slower than the older one
The speed profiles vary, too. There is a voltage at which both are running at the same speed but an increase in voltage has the new one running faster than the old one.
The sound module on the new one is far superior to the old. If compatibility with an older loco is important, choose the older one. Otherwise going with the newer version might be wiser.

I had one of the early C&S moguls -1990ish - and I was very pleased with it. I used LGB 3' curves then & it looked as good as you would expect on that radius. It came supplied with 2 track magnets and these triggered the extra sounds depending on which way they were placed in the track. The running sounds etc were very good and I keep an eye open for one around my area. Afraid I can't comment on the 2-8-2 though.

The early Moguls had analog sound. Very out-dated by today's standards, and BIG.
These things are going for $250 or so. The guts are basically the same (later units went to 4-wire motor blocks, early had 3-wire), the very early units had rigid center drive axles (no springs).
The Mikes are really a 2-4-4-2, as the power block us broken into two that hinge......siderods do some creative things. They work on 1100 curves.

I agree that the 2-8-2 would look better on bigger dia curves. i was interested in it due to the big price drop for them this month and after this month the price will go back up.
one thing i am not too impressed about this unit is that the side rods are plastic. i was expecting metal.


on the 2-6-0, I am not sure how much the sound chip changed, the use unit is i think 4 years old. but on the other hand, it will be a huge step up from what i have now regardless. I am leaning to the used unit.

I noticed your post count didn't change any.

Give it a day or two, something will turn up. In the interim, why not contact LGB and ask them if there's any difference in the Moguls over the years? Or maybe even a long time retailer?

As far as the 2-8-2 Mikado making a turn in a 5' radius, I think it would look much better with a larger size. FWIW.

I cant believe NOone has any opinion on this. the LGB 2-6-0 is not a rare engine neither is the 2-8-2

OK, so I know where i can get an older LGB 2-6-0 C&S MOGUL 2019S...is there a huge reason why i should get a newer mogul instead? There is a big price difference between the used C&S and a new one, I am just wondering if its justifyable or not.

Also, the LGB 2-8-2 mikado, it can navigate 4' dia turns, I use primarilly 5' dia turns, but how good will it look navigating a 5' turn? it if will look horrible, then I am not sure i want it and the 2-6-0 would be better.

any pointers is very much apriciated.
