Thanks guys for all the help, we haven't yet finalised our swap with the German couple buit we are both keen. They have a timing problem, one of there little girls will still have a week or two to go at school for the year.

They are are terrific couple with an incredible house and the swap vehicle is the choice berween a new Merc and a Porsche GT, what a choice.

Our other swap; all of August in the Eastern part of England and a few weeks in Normandie just near where the Allies landed in WW 2 in a 300 year old farmhouse (hope it hasn't got a ghost). I can see iandor and kimbrit getting run in by the gendarmes for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

The fact that we can speak neither German or French doesn't worry us at all and we only hope the Poms can undewrstand our Sydney version of English.

Regards

Hi Ian,

If you're not that familiar with Germany you might want to spend one day in Rothenburg ODT (ob der Tauber). It's a walled medievel city that is quite interesting..kinda touristy, but still worth a look. It's directly west of Nuernberg about 100k or so. btw..I work for the germans and have spent some time poking about the country..let me know if you've got any questions, maybe I can help (if I don't know, my german associates probably will).

Regards,

john

Thanks very much for thee expert advice, we are getting very close to doing a house swap in Germany and another in England and have knocked back another in Germany , another in England ,Spain, Canada and probably Ireland as well. This is one of the most advantageous and interesting things i have experienced in my life.

I might see if I can get my contacts in Germany to ring LGB and see if they can find out some stuff for me.

Ian,
Here's LGB's current policy on tours:

"We still make LGB trains in our own factory in Nürnberg, Germany. We train our own employees and provide them with a safe, clean environment where they can build quality trains for you. Factory tours are available to groups through LGB Telegram magazine. However, for safety and scheduling reasons, we cannot provide factory tours to individuals. But we do invite you to visit us. You can see our extensive showroom, enjoy our display layouts and talk to one of our customer service representatives. Individual visits must be scheduled in advance. To schedule a visit, please telephone Mr. Biedenbacher at +49-911-83-707-0"

LGB does not have a factory outlet store. Nuremberg has some great hobby shops, though, and I'd recommend visiting a few of them. There are some very, very good garden railroads in the area (some of which are in the LGB catalog), but I don't recall whether any are open to the public. The German Railways run an absolutely terrific museum right near the main train station, and that's a must-see. If you have a bit more time, the Maerklin museum is very good, and they do have a store. And even if you're not a big fan of German trains, try to take an hour or so to catch the action at the main train station. You'll be impressed, I think.

Enjoy your trip!

You need to contact the LGB Factory well in advance. Let them know what period of time you will be in Germany, and they will then let you know a date and time that you can visit. At least that is the way it was a couple years ago when I toured the factory. It is certainly a great experience. They do not sell to visitors, but have a showroom of all their merchandise. Have some photos of my visit on my web page. http://www.mygardenrr.com

We are almost certain to go to Germany next July or so and I would like to visit the LGB factory, my questions are as set out below and I hope someone can give me advice in these directions.

1/ Is it easy to arrange a factory visit and hoe do you go about it?

2/ Can you buy stuff direct from the factory at advantageous prices?

3/ Is there anything i should really try to see?

4/ I might try and talk Doreen into seeing a few layouts, are they worthwhile?

Any advice would be ahelp

Regards Ian
