Rather than answer you question, I'll reffer you to aother member here. Have a quick look at the posting titles. You'll find one abour track insulators for DCC. Inside that post Gregg has made a comment. In his signature block he includes a link to his site. There is a wealth of info there to sharewith your friend.

Hi everyone, first time posting on this forum. I have been over in the MR forum for years. I am only familiar with HO scale DCC. i posted this question on MR forum and was directed here.
A friend of mine asked me about DCC / sound for his G scale trains. Currently he has Lionel, Bachmann, and LGB which are all DC. I believe these are mostly indoors but could also be for outdoors. I know his locos are at least 15 years old so not sure if they would have sockets etc for decoders.
So my questions are should it be a total switch over to a DCC system? Which systems have enough power for G scale trains? One of the locos has 4 motors! Clearly they demand big power.
Could the existing DC operating system be kept in use and then install a dual mode type of decoder that allows for use on the existing DC systems? Which I think is his preferred idea of how to go about it. Quite frankly I would think basic sounds and lights would suffice.
Any insight on how to point him in the right direction would be appreciated.
