Good Morning,
Great story Rene, I hope that You and your nephew can get your dad (Grandpa) to get back into the hobby. I am sure that if Grandpa shows an interest at ths time he will have a "BUDDY" for life. This exposure to your nephew by Grandpa will also provide exposure to little "Grace Ann" by first her "BIG" Brother and then Grandpa. Their you have it, a FAMILY RAILROAD and YOU are the CHIEF ENGINEER.
Here's Hoping,
Ron

This is a bit off topic (since it's O gauge), but I thought I'd share. I was visiting my parents over the weekend and decided to set up my dad's postwar Lionel train under the Christmas tree. My nephew (4) was interested, so I let him help me. Once I got the train running, he was absolutely fascinated with it.

Soon, I was explaining the kind of train it was (cute to hear him say "steam locomotive), how to fill the smoke unit (which I'd converted to liquid), and how to operate the RW transformer. It was amazing how quickly he picked up everything.

Maybe he's a future hobbyist in the making. . and maybe he can inspire Grandpa to get back into trains too. [:D]
