Thanks for the lead on the YouTube video. It was just what I needed to get on the right track ... ha! I've ordered the new Pickup Shoes, new track and a few new spare parts that I should replace if I'm tearing it apart. Will be in touch with the status of my repair. Thanks again!
Doebtown,
I just pulled apart a STAINZ today (I am getting some help troubleshooting in a post "Stuck Stainz"), in fact. You can find the tech manuals on line as a PDF, but they are pretty sparse. Basically, you follow the numbers. Of note, the shell over the motor housing was much bigger than I anticipated! Don't force anything! I had to find a video on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_I01b_TZ-k) before I could break her open and tear her down.
My repair went way beyond yours, so I had to really pull the old girl apart. This was my first time doing it, and I cannot say you would have to strip her to the bones just to change the shoes.
Aloha,
Eric

I have an old LGB 2020 0-4-0 Locomotive No. 2774 G-Scale. The pickup shoes are very worn (so much that I can see the brass under both of them). I've found the replacement part online (LGB 63210), but I'm not sure how to take the loco apart or replace the shoes. I can't believe that this isn't a highly documented topic, but I've looked fairly extensively and didn't find aything. Can anybody point me to these instructions or feed them to me? Thanks!
I just did it. I used part number 63218 which is the pick up shoe set. Turn the engine over and carefully set it on something stable. Remove the four phillips head screws that hold the gear cover on and slowly pry the cover off. That will allow you to remove and replace the Pick up shoes. Just reverse the process to put it back together. It took me about 5 minutes to do. I hope this helps.
