If you've got a garden RR club in your area, check with them. Our club has three or four of the LGB starter set power supplies. They are used, but in good shape. Our club would probably sell them for less than $20 but you'd have to pay shipping. Local IS best.
Thank you to both. Mark, the products look great, but not for this simple use. It will not be open to the public.
I found a controller on eBay for $35; hopefully it serves our purposes well: LGB 50081 G Scale DC Power Supply Transformer; 24 Volt, 1A http://www.ebay.com/itm/252210650326
Have a look on E-Bay. I've seen power supply/controlers from LGB starter sets for as low as $20.

Hello Alheim
I work with a company that makes G-scale controllers, unfortunately our stuff is not low cost. From our product line, the two controllers which would be the best fit for you would be the 'Mini-Mag' or the 'Magnum 5-SR'. I'd keep my eye open for one on e-bay, where you could save a bit of money. To get more information on them, go to 'www.bridgewerks.com'. If your display is open to the public, send me an e-mail at mark@bridgewerks.com, and we may be able to help you out.
Hi folks, my first post, thanks for having me.
My company here in NY has a nice, small, and intact LGB G-scale train set that we set up for Christmas. It has typically been just something to look at, but we'd like to get her going again. The controller is missing.
We have one locomoive (a 2020D) and only a couple of cars behind it, on a small, circular track. It will only be used occasionally a couple of days each year.
The local train hobby store has a controller, but wants over $200. It seems too nice for our needs.
Any affordable suggestions? Hopefully under $100.
Cheers!
