How to assemble flex track with staggered joints?
Posted by John Meixel on Saturday, August 16, 2014 7:03 AM

I am planning to assemble track using Accucraft AMS 250 brass rail and tie strips.  I plan to use staggered joints.  What is the best way to assemble the track?  I have seen posts where a jig is used to hold the tie strips so the rail can be inserted but those discussions seem to be only for assembling track where the joints will not be staggered. Is anything done differently for staggered joints?

Thank you!

I know that some of you have done this.  Please give me any tips you have.  Thanks!

It should just slide in okay. Armor All helps some to lubricate. I use SVRR rail joiners, you can also get Hillman Clamps or Bear Jaws. I recommend clamps of some type.

Staggered joints are a pain though. I'd recommend cutting off the piece that is too long when you bend the curves. Easier to lift the track out if you have to repair it or something under it.  I have staggered joints and wish I didn't.

If you want to keep them, you have to slide the track into the tie strips as you lay it.  You can get the staggered joint effect by using a Dremel with a cutting disc to cut small grooves in the track.

Like Jerry says; it simply slides together, most times no effort hardly at all. I agree with Jerry's comment to use a clamping joint. I use Split Jaw as that is the brand carried by my local retail hobby shop.
