Low Point
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 17, 2004 9:47 PM
Is it my imaginataion or not but does this forum have low and high points from time to time. If so I feel that we are in a low point right now and something shpuld be done about it.

Ian, I've noticed traffic is higher through the week due to everyone reporting or asking questions on the projects of the past weekend.

We are also heading into the Doldrums for many people. Can't run trains once 3 feet of snow falls. May be a good idea to start looking for more activity on the scratchbuild and modelbuilding front as a lot of people do those type of projects over the winter months.

   Have fun with your trains

I try to be active on the weekends, but that is when I in mid-build. Right now I am in the middle of a really slow project building a depot for the ficticous Norma, Texas. I normally wait until a project ends before I make a link to it.

Yes, but this, like all forums, is subject to lulls and rushes.

We probably need something controversial to stir things up a bit. Remember when Jose got us all riled up over the great "scale standardization" debate? Or when we got all hot and bothered over the outragious things the Union Pacific was trying to do?

You're right, we seem to be stuck in a rut right now discussing the best color to paint a caboose, etc, etc.

Matt,
Lets keep the "D" thing dead OK. ---BIG GRIN!--- I myself have been busy truck shopping the past week. Finally found one that was not an over priced piece of blank blank blank. Anyhow now I am busy with the work of getting it safetied. Just the fun mechanical stuff, some new dual exhaust (rumble rumble) and I will have a new train hauler. On the train side of stuff as Vic said the weather is to blame here. Cold and wet. Another month and this will once again be "The Great WHITE North". Later eh...Brian.

Hey Guy's / Girl's
What we need to spice things up is a "Lady's Night" to stiir up all us old crusty men.
Lets create a forum on eg, What our wives / girfriends contribute or think of our hobby.
Let them reply.
I'am shure it would create new interest and hey they cant't say there not involved in what we do.
Can you just see the new Forums, (Railway cooking, colour co-ordinated plants etc)
After all the money we spend on our hobby is as much theirs as it is ours.
There you go Walt "a controversial topic"
Now I,ve stired you all up I will be of the air for a few day as I,m going interstate. (Melbourne)
Good luck

I hate to disagree Gary but the money I spend on my hobby is my own. What She does with Her money is up to her.If it was 'our' money, there would be no railway.(but I'm sure there would still be a fair amount of new shoes[:D])

Well this seems to have got things going a bit, but i really don't think its to do with falling snow; being tied up indoors would just stir the imagination up. No I justthink things get slow from time to time and then they pick up.

Gary I am retired now but I have had 35 years of going to Melbourne of business and I still cannot say a thing much good about it, it is really a boaring place.

Did you hear about the Melbournian that was so stupid even other Melbournians realised something was wrong?

To explain to our pom and Yankee mates . Australia is a very big country, 6 th biggest actually but it is pretty empty and it has only got 2 super cities, Sydney and Melbourne. So you can imagine the rivalry and anything insulting we can think of to say about each other we will. Although I live in Queensland i did live in Sydney for 60 years, so you know where I am coming from.

Another matter did you guys know Australia has its own code of football (AFL) which eminates from Melbourne; well every year we play against Ireland's Gaelic Football players in an international combination rules. Well last Saturday, Ireland gave Australia a hiding at Croke Park Dublin, I thought i would share that with you all.

Now for you Joe I know you think King Ranch is pretty big, well how does King Ranch stack up against Annie Station for size its 5.5 million square acres, its located right here in Queensland.

A bit of local news we have not been hit by monsoons here for 7 months but we got 75 mm (3") rain in a few hours early this morning and howling winds and I think it took out one end of my ICE Train. It was stabled in the new Vampires Tunnel and it blew a near wall of water right through it and the poor old Ice Train as well. One end works but the other is as dead as a DoDo.

Whenever you get in the doldrums it is a good time to take on a new challenge or master a new skill. It’s too early in the season for me to begin a building project, which I like to save for the cold months. Nevertheless, I always like to master something new using my Paint Shop Pro 8 program to edit pictures. Here’s an example using something called a “callout,” which I always thought was called a speech balloon.

Then again, perhaps I should be putting those marker lights on my LGB drovers’ caboose!

Regards to all,

Ian,

Thanks for the King Ranch (running W) cameo in the forum. Have you ever been to Kingsville? Texas, not Ontario. If you have, you were still 28 miles from my house!

Well, if y'all are in the mood for controversey! Just wait for the next post I make.

Here is something for you to think about Joe, when I was a kid my mothers family actually renewed a 99 year lease on a sheep station out west called "Wilga Mount".

A/ It was as flat as a board
B/ All the wilga trees died in the drought of 1936, the year I was born.

Anyway, this was our own property, 40,000 acres and the front gate was 1 and half miles away. (Oz wasn't metric then). 8000 sheep, 36 dogs, 200 cattle and about 50 old racehorses that no one wanted.

I have been to Texas and when it comes to being down right desolate, it has a long way to go to be anywhere near as bad as outback Australia.

When someone stirs something up it does draw a lot of attention and then it gets deleted. So it's best to keep it quiet.

Don

We've only had a very very few topics get nuked here. and those were only as a last resort. Its been different on each forum here depending which forum your in and who the moderator is. The only topics deleted have mostly been due to inappropriate topics or comments, politics or religion. As long as we are talking trains, we have some very heated debates but everyone gets along well enough, just look at the G gauge and Scale topics, very heated at times but we're all friends at the end. Stir, Don, Stir.[:D]

   Have fun with your trains

There is a particular and highly cherished rivalry between Texans and Aussies when it comes to size but were very good mates anyway. Texans do have a very good and very big state and they are proud of it and we wouldn't have it any other way.

However they did learn a bit of humility when Alaska came along but managed to avoid seeing the truth, when it was staring them in the face and this is agood thing.

However Australia is a different matter and we have more of nothing than any other country or continent, we really do.

Here Here! Well said and an outstanding sentiment that I will echo. If there was any continent I would like to visit, Australia would be it. If I could purchase some land there, I would do it (only money stops me [:(]).

We of Texas, have never formally recognized the existance of Alaska [:D]! Since they have, in some parts, six weeks of night they aren't have the place we are. I wonder if anyone does Large Scale up there? I think indoor gauges would be popular.

Long live Australia! And (since you have British in your flag) Long live Great Britian! And (my patiotism would dictate) God Bless America (after all, we need all the help we can get).

The Texas Pledge...

"Honor the Texas Flag, I pledge allegiance to thee,
Texas One and Indivisible!"

The Large Scale Pledge...

"Oil the Locomotives, I pedge allegiance to thee,
Repairs, Not-Often and Intolerable!"

Hey Ya'll,

I am lucky to live where I live. It hardly ever snows (bad thing), though when It does, we get that "less than a foot of snow" that is perfect for a Garden Railroader. It does get cold thugh, but it's a perfect chance to see that exaghst from live steamers. By the way, I have a trick for making coal fired livesteamers smoke. When you add the coal, put in 3 or more wood pellets. If you want a woodfired locomotive (see my topic "Woodfired" in live steam) just use the wood pelets. You need alot of them thoguh and you have to stop afetr every run to refeul. It looks great though accoriding to Kevin Strong, who tested the idea for me. It makes alot of smoke.

Capt.,

Read your comments about garden railroaders in Alaska. It seems there are some--one gentleman from Alaska has entered our photo contest two years in a row. And there's a lady from AK who is working on an article for the magazine.

You just never know!
