Promoting Garden Railroading
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 7, 2004 4:37 PM
Today, the Iowa City Public Library held their story hour at our railroad. There were 65 children, parents and grandparents who attended. It was a rainy day, but everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot. Lots of questions, and interest.

Good on you, well done.
I find it surprising how many adults are interested in model trains, specially outside ones. I have not advertised or anthing but most weekends last year had one or two come around with their children on the weekends.
It amazing how they come around " just for the kids", but its always the parents that dont want to leave....In one case they came around for ten miutes, but after 3 hours dad would still not leave, and they had a domestic. (argument)

However, The worst problem is the mess they leave in the bathroom.
No kidding, how any kid can use so much toilet paper, so much soap and leave one little room in such a mess is beyond me...and this happened over and over again.
Some dont even make it to the bowl, but their mums dont want to know...
Not only kids though, after one adult used the toilet found used matches and burnt paper on the floor....Scary, isnt it....

Its getting to the point that you say no, but its shame as our hobby will only advance provided we can show the little ones, and not so little, what can be done.

Anyone else found the same
Tony.

Richard,

What a neat idea. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. Trains + reading. What could be better?

Hi Richard,
Good for you! Likewise I am glad to see the hobby promoted. Gscalechuffchuff: As for the "mess" I'm afraid that is what comes with "guests'. Don't get me wrong...I would never support such behavior anywhere. Too bad people do this and expect to be invited back. Keep the trains running guys! Later eh...Brian.

Hey Ya'll

I have been conjuring up ideas to promote the hobby. I have planned to bring my tracks and trains (when I buy them) to the fall fair at church. Not long after I plan to have my railroad up and running by early to late march, so I plan to host an open house and a steam up next fall.

Hi Ben,
Not hiding...just working! Saturday was deliveries in the city, Sunday, Monday was my scheduled trip to Regina, Sask. As long as people keep eating at McDonalds I gotta' keep hauling them burgers! Got three days off now so... back to posting. Got some great news here to post in the near future. Not official yet. Later eh...Brian.

I really don't have any interest in promoting the hobby why should i; its mine all mine and everyone else can get stuffed.

Besides, that is why I live on an island, so that no one can see what i am doing and they should all mind their own business as do I.

Meanwhile back in the real world, i have voluteered to have an club meeting (LGB and Garden Railway Club of Australia) at my place in 2005, if it happens it will be the first one in Queensland.

I was surprised about Tony's problem, I have been to many club meetings down in Sydney and did not experience anything like that at all and they get 80 to 100 people turn up as a rule.

Regards

Ian
