Used LGB track
Posted by JJ33 on Monday, November 4, 2013 10:40 PM

I'm new to the hobby and looking at used LGB track on eBay, looks while weathered with shiny rail tops, is $16 to much for a 10610 4ft track? And how long will it last?

Thanks,

JJ

I have this track outdoors in New England and have had no issues with it.

LGB brass rail does turn brown with age.

Price is what you are willing to pay, and used track can be as low as $2 per foot to $6 per foot depending on the seller.   I try to stay around $3 myself.

I started with LGB track about 20 years ago and have moved it with me twice now.  that old track is still better than some of the new stuff I have (which is only 10 years oldWink )

How long will it last? With normal care and maintenance (i.e. do NOT build fires on top of rail, do not send track through tree branch shreader, etc.) it could possibly out survive you. I've got LGB that has been in the ground since 1997 and still looking good to go. As far as price, if it were anything other than LGB (Original) that might be a bit high in price. whenever possible try to stay in the $3 per foot price range.

OK than half the price of retail. I need to get 239 feet of track for my main line and not in a rush so I'll keep the $3 a foot in mind.

Thanks,

Up here at that price it would be snapped up  but we also factor in s/h/i  for a total cost/foot.   3-4 yrs ago $ spiked so anytime final cost below $10/ft.  closer to $5/ft. is a good pricepoint.

Unless it was abused or beat on with a hammer it should last longer than your railway does and then sold to another hobbyist !!   imho

Welcome to our hobby and Good Luck,

I won on eBay 20 LGB 10610 4ft for $13 a piece and they look nice, used indoors only, so I only need 34 more and 32 more R3's for my main line.

Thanks again and yeah this is an awesome hobby to in...

It is a AWESOME hobby.  There are so many aspects to it if you get tired of say building rolling stock go run a train, if you get tired of trimming plants go put a sound system in your favorite loco.  There are lots of facets to this hobby.  Part of the fun for me is finding items at train shows, yard sales and online that I can use on the RR.  Your RR won't be built in a day or a year and it will never be finished so keep your eye out for goodies like used track at a good price. 90% of my layout is preowned.  Oh yeah with track it doesn't have to be shiny to run your track powered locos on it so a bit of tarnish is OK on that used track.

Happy RRing.
