I believe it would cost $34.99 on Ebay with *free* shipping.
If I would ship a 40 lb package from let say Pittsburgh, PA to San Diego, Cal., It would cost me about $61.02 .... Price estimate from UPS.com PLUS the cost of the 40lb bag of ballast.
So would say $30.00 flat rate shipping across the US with buy it now be profit or a loss the thew seller?
Moral of my story is inflation.
Yikes!
If anyone in the Albuquerque area has a need for quarry fines for ballast, I've got plenty. The only cost to you would be transportation and a thank you! When I started mine two years ago, I had a truck deliver a couple tons for about $50. The delivery was the same no matter how much I bought until the truck was full so I told them "fill it". I was going to put down a 4" concrete bed and about the same in fines on top to bring it up to the surface. Well after a few feet I realized I had a little more fines than I needed so I scratched the concrete and now the road bed that is about 8" of fines only, except for the first few feet.
When I was finished I went out and bought four large garbage containers (more $ than the fines) and I have another railroad's worth of fines in "storage". I just wish I had more room but I just don't. I have tried to talk a neighbor into using them for his flag stone walk around his pattio but he is the slowest builder I have ever seen. A fireman too with loads of time.
I agree 200% on the Ebay comments. Ocassionally something will come along but not rolling stock.
When I had my afterschool job back in the day, I would take (the boss's) pickup with a dumper body to the gravel pit for a load as my boss asked.
the Payloader would come over...I had to climb up to tell the operator what I wanted. he would take a scoop out of the pile and bring it over to the truck (which looked pretty little at this point) and he would tell me to say "when" he would give the bucket a little nudge do start the flow, so to speak, and WHOMPH! The old Ford would get punched right down before I could open my mouth!
Driving that old thing to the job site was an adventure! Looking over the hood my eyes met mostly sky. The old girl handled somewhat strangely too. she kinda leaned this way and that like a tired horse tasting the leaves beside the trail. there was no worry that I would consider going above about 25 but i had to lean back on the reigns going down hill and give her the spurs going up smelling of clutch most of the way!
Mine must not have been the first load because she never really drove straight and level!

last time I bought 3/4 ton of quarry dust for 12 bucks in my ford ranger pickup. The mile to my house was very slow. (didn't want to damage the frame.)
When you look on ebay some things are a rip off Look at g gauge rolling stock some prices are way out of line. I would think sellers would want sales but we are not going to be high way robbed

I drive my truck and dump trailer over to the Clayton Quarry, about three miles.
I usually get one sometimes two tons at about $25.00 per.
It's when I get it home the trouble starts!
Don't believe everything you think!
I saw a "Genuine LGB" metric nut priced at $9.95 plus $5.50 shipping. You could get one at any Ace Hardware or similar store for less than 50 cents.
A lot of the items on e-Bay seem to be for people who don't know the true value of many of the items, and several sellers obviously know nothing at all about the products they're selling.
Beleave it or not That's what a 1/2 ton of ballist would cost if you buy it on E-Bay. I was surfing evelbay out of lack of interest in doing someting productive and found ; a seller with 40+ lbs of ballist for sale. The "buy it now" price is 34.99 with free shipping. After I picked myself up off the floor from laffing so hard I fell out of my chair. I had to share this with all of you. When I touch up my ballist I buy a 90lb bag for $5.50. I used about a ton of the crushed rock two seasons ago. What have you found for sale that made you Laff out loud, thats just to hard to believe.
