Modern 50' Box Car
Posted by JennyPFan on Saturday, July 30, 2011 8:37 AM

Has anyone produced a modern 50' box car for G scale?  Specifically the Railbox type with the exterior  posts.  If not, has anyone kit bashed one?    I am really into modern equipment and want more than the 60' box car and the Evans box car on my railway.

Thanks

Howdy Michael; I’ve seen LGB, Rail Box, box cars at RC Hobbies in Sacramento, CA. I haven’t looked at them out of the box; however I believe they are 50’ and have exterior posts. I’ve heard that LGB’s “American” line rolling stock is larger that 1:29 scale; but they’re close enough for me and balance of detail to robustness is very good. I have over a dozen LGB 50’ flat cars and 50’ covered hoppers. Their cars come with plastic wheels which I change to metal and use Kadee 830 couplers.

Hope this helps. Rob

Yes, I am new to G Scale as I am converting over from 2-rail O scale.  Both Atlas and Weaver had a large number of 50' exterior post box cars available in O scale.  I like the 60' boxcar by USAT and I plan on getting a couple of those and getting a few of the Aristo-Craft 53' Evan's boxcars as well.  But that 50' ext post car is the one I want to have a fair number of....

Marty, been looking at the video's of the NTCGRR and holy crap that is one awesome railway....

Thanks

Hi Michael,

I believe the Evans series of boxcars are 50ft. cars.  There are produced by Aristo-Craft.  Recently some new designs were introduced to their range.  Consult a reliable G Scale dealer. he should have them or be able to obtain them for you.

Umm... Alan, he stated: " I am really into modern equipment and want more than the 60' box car and the Evans box car on my railway." (and they are 53' I believe)

Marty, his post count is 3, I'd say it's a safe bet he is new. Wink

By the way, welcome to the hobby! Take a look at the manufacturer's web sites, Seems you have looked at the Aristo and the USAT web sites, try the AML (American Main Line), they seem to be making more modern cars in 1:29.

Regards, Greg

Mike,

The only 50ft Modern car available is from LGB if you can find any, USATs just released a 60fter

And Aristocraft will so ive been told release a brand new ( 50ft ) Double Door Modern box car with a 100 rd names within the year or so.

If you go to their web site store and click on 53ft and 50ft DD and scroll down past all the

53fters you will then see the rd names for the new 50ft cars.

They will be doing Railbox in 12 rd #s           ART51018L

Michael

thanks, if your ever in the area please drop by.

I do have lots of other crap on the RR also. racoon, etc.

You did say modern, so there is less, I was thinking 50fters. I 've always been glad for anything that looks close to modern mainline. You can take many of the USAT 50fters and remove cat walks, and cut ladders down.

Many personalizing of cars can be done.

BTY Thanks Greg.

I take everything tongue in cheek,

Michael, I don't know if you looked on the new products page, but the car carriers from USAT should be next spring... that's a long time, but they look fantastic.

Do you have broad curves on your layout?

Greg,

I am pretty new as you have noted. I am in O scale 2-rail right now and looking to make the jump over the precipice to G scale but the rolling stock is the thing holding me back. I have not even purchased track yet though I do have a decent size yard so radius/diameter should not be an issue.

A couple of examples below of the cars I want to run on my railway.

The car below in G Scale would be the coup de grace to my O Scale endeavors.
