Track issues for NM&RR
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 19, 2004 12:26 PM
I plan to use Aristocraft track for mainline operations, LGB for tracksidings and spurs and...

I need advise on what type of switches to use in terms of brands. I have read on this forum in different places that Bachmann Locos have problems on LGB switches. Since all my first Loco's will probably be Bachmann, what should I do.

Here is the rationale for why I am going to use this combination of track...

I am impressed by the "screw" system that Aristocraft track employs, with a small amount of solder, I think I can maintain good electrical connection.

I like the look of LGB track, but its hooks and clips seem like they will bring up the issues I fought in N and HO scale. By placing such track on sidings they will run in "parallel" and those issues could be greatly minimized.

I need a reliable switch system that will b e manual. I don't mind throwing the switches manually, but I need them to work.

Let me in on some track secrets and correct any "false" logic in my plan.

Thanks,

I have both types of track on my small railway, using LGB switches. I have no problems with bachman equipment going through the 16000 switches as long as the switches are flat and level.[:D]

Good point, I hope I can lay track accordingly. My level wills will be pretty flat, much like the geography of South Texas.

I had problems with my Annie derailing on Aristo 4' dia switches, and I read the same problem for LGB R1 switches, Its a problem with the engine pilot not being weighted enough to track thru the frogs more than the switch itself. 16000 LGB or 6.5' dia Aristo's should not suffer the same problem as the angle of divergence is much less , it should roll thru easily.

Be advised though LGB 16000 series DO NOT come in Manual switches, powered only and they dont sell the manaul mechanism seperatley. Why? because they are greedy and want you to buy their pricey control system for it. I would buy one each of Aristo and LGB and test to see which works better and then decide based on performance.

And use Rail Clamps instead of the regular joiners, it allows you to remove the switches for repairs, replacement, or maintanence without disrupting the adjacent track, this is VERY important unless you want to reballast several feet of track if you ever have to remove a switch.

   Have fun with your trains

vsmith,

I couldn't agree with you more on the swith and rail clamp factor. I have purchased three lgb 1 foot straight sections and 3 aristo-craft 1 foot sections. as well as rail clamps (slaw and hillman) I have tested all fo them and found that aristo-craft track and lgb track are the same, but aristo is cheaper and the track comes in secrtions or optional lots. Hillman railclamps are the best though.

One more thing, USE LGB 16000 TURNOUTS. THEY ARE MORE RELIABLE.
