Hi, Im located in Wellington, North Island, NZ. Didnt feel much of the earthquake here, probably because it was so shallow, but Christchurch is a real mess.
Morning after and its setting in, buildings flattened, many bodies in debri. Unfortunately it hit durring lunchtime while most buildings ( restaurants, shops, catherderal would be occupied.)
The numbers of dead being released are only guestimates but it will probably go into the hundreds.
For people that dont normally experience earthquakes, the main problem is not the intial quake but the after shocks. Go to this link and you will see what I mean
http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html
Its not like bombs, TV dissasters, your trying to rescue people but the earth , and parts of the buildings are still moving while your working to rescue occupants.
EArthquakes are a frightening experience, cant predict them, cant really do anything but take cover and hope the cover you chose is strong enough to support whatever falls on you...

I've got a friend in Christchurch, haven't heard from him lately. I'm hoping for the best, but I understand that gettting on forums and sending emails isnt' a priority right now for those folks. I went through the same thing with a good friend in Beruit when the Israelis were bombing the city. Turns out she was fine, but had to evacuate so I didn't hear anything for a few weeks.
Best wishes for our brothers and sisters in New Zealand.
