I am indexing all of my GR Magazines and I would like to know which was the very first issue. My oldest issue is January-February 1984 that I purchased at Sidestreet Bannerworks in Denver CO. After that I purchased my copies from Caboose Hobbies and then from Kalembach when they purchased GR.
Anny Hystory would be apreciated.

I went out to my garage where I keep all old issues. The oldest I have is from 1990. After rummaging through the GR mags and a bunch of OSH yearly Train Calenders I did stumble onto something interesting. It's a magazine called Train Yard published by On Track Productions from Laguna Hills, CA. This issue is Vol. 1 #4, Nov-Dec 1991. I only have the one issue and don't recall what happened to future issues. Now I'm wondering whatever happened with Train Yard. Did GR buy them out as it has a very similar look to it like GR?

TRUST ME--I USED TO WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT!
I am not Familiar with Train Yard, but I have Issues of a Magazine called Outdoor Railroader Published by Westlake Publishing Company. The oldest Issue I have was AUG./SEP. 1992. I believe it went to the wayside after Kalmbach purchased Garden Railroad Magazine.
I wonder if Kalmbach could shed some light to this??
My oldest handy issue of Garden Railways is May-June 1992, which is about when I started in “G” gauge. This issue has a feature article on building the Woodland Railway by Jim Strong with photo credits by Kevin Strong. Jim states, “The Woodland Railway has been a passion of mine for the past 12 years.”
Have fun, Rob
I have in my possesion a copy of the 10th Anniversary issue, It features the first 2 1/3 pages of Garden Railways first issue. The date is Jan-Feb 1984. Regards, Dennis.
Thanks Dennis. So I must have the very 1st issue. It has a total of 16 pages including front and back cover. An Editorial by Marc Horovitz, Article by Peter Jones and center spread ( pages 8-9) called Notes from the DANDY LINES. The price was $2.25
Thanks;
Yes, you do have the first issue of the magazine! The magazine derived from Marc's newsletter, called the Sidestreet Banner.

Rene,
Did Train Yard that I mentioned early in this thread somehow evolve into GR Mag also? Just curious because the format is so similar.

Thanks Rene;
Now I do remember the newsletters.
Train Yard--I am not familiar with this title. It was not part of GR's history.
Finescale/Outdoor Railroader--Kalmbach purchased GR in early 1996. It was a few years later that Kalmbach began distributing (not publishing) the then Outdoor Railroader. (Kalmbach distributes a number of other magazines that we don't publish.) Outdoor changed their name to Finescale Railroader, then eventually stopped publishing a magazine and now Westlake, their owner, publishes two beefy annuals per year instead.
Hello Rene S, are there any plans for GR to creat disks with all of the old mags included? National Geographic has done this and ist's really quite nice.
Doublecross--Kalmbach is just starting to offer some of our magazines as DVD sets. Trains released 70 years on DVD just before the holidays and it's selling great. Model Railroader is now looking to create a DVD set.
GR may offer a set in the future, but there's nothing in the works at the moment.
