It was not very hard at all. I found a service manual on line. Google LGB 2018D mogul, and you should be able to find it. Most G-gauge trains are pretty easy to work on, especially LGB ones. Four screws hold the tender shell on, and then you can access all the wiring in the tender. The locomotive is a little more difficult, but take your time and look at the manual. My local hobby store made me a great deal on the sound system, and I got the rest of the parts off ebay for buy-it-now prices. In the end, I think I had about $200.00 in repair parts, plus $290.00 for the old broken locomotive from a local hobby store.
can I ask how hard it was? where did you acquire the parts from? how much did it cost you?
Yes, I did repair it myself. It had a old sound system, that no longer worked, so I replaced it with a LGB unit. I also added new roller bearing wheels, contacts on the locomotive, a new smoke unit, and new idle gears+a very good cleaning and lubrication job.
+1 did you repair it yourself??? I acquired one from a long time friend and it is in need of some help.
I love it!
Thought I would post a link to a video of my repaired LGB Mogul.
