Travis I drew this up to give you an idea of what could be done, I used a 5 inch tank and 1/4" inch plywood for the top, I have never posted pictures before on this site, I hope you can read the measurements to give you an idea of what you might be able to do. Now we will see how they post.

Travis,

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you with the information I told you about.

But I haven't found it in my files.

I'm still looking. Only hope I find it before you finish you tank.

My water tower was built from strip wood.  I cut the roof strips into triangles which resembled the sections of roofing on Yogi Wallace's metal roof.

I actually used more sections but the idea will work either way.  After forming enough sections, I used masking tape to temporarily hold them side by side.  Before wrapping them into the conical roof, I put some glue between each section.  I then just glued them to the top of the tower.

I made the top of the tank with a plywood ring.  I used a rasp to carve the top edge of the plywood to match the angle of the roof for more gluing area.

Travis, Here is a link to a water tower project I completed a few years ago. Pictures show pretty well how the entire structure, including the roof  was built. Jack

Travis.

I scratch build.

I show how the top and sides are made were made on my site.

The server is supposed to have things back in order on my site today, the 13th, so my links will work.

I can give you an idea for a top base for your shingles.

I just have to find the pictures.

I'll get back to you as soon as I find the information.

Looks great!!.. Did you build it yourself or was it a kit..? I'm trying to build my own roof out of wood But am not having any success. First time doing this type of roof. I want a gabled conical shaped roof similiar to your metal roof. ...Travis

Travis,

Maybe a little more information would help.

What type roof are you wanting?  There were many different styles; from open as has been stated to a flat board cover, to a round pitched conical structure, to a square hip or gable style.

What type roofing, shingles, metal, tar paper?

Is this for a "scale model" or are you using the 10 foot rule?

Will the tank be outdoors 24-7 or only for fair weather?

The choice of type, style, and material may help determine a course of construction.

There are lots of ways to go.

Depending on the size you could leave it open, and have a swimmer or two
