Has any one seen photos of a chemical plant made in G Scale.
I would like to make one and my mind is drawing blanks.

Funny you should mention this, I saw a large mock-up of a petro-chemical refinery at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. See if you can get them to send you photos. It is a maze of pipes, distillation towers and other things. It seems easy to build, albiet it will take time and patience.

Also, I would have to really look at the pipeworks to see if what I build makes sense.

I have thought about going to Corpus Christi and taking some pictures of the Flint Hills refinery among others, but due to terrorism issues...I have restrained myself.

The Museum Webpage (the exhibit with the "pump jack" oil well is the one I am taking about, in fact the refinery is right behind the "pump-jack")

I thought about going back down to Dow in Clute, but as you said taking photos and all just is not the right time.
I even question asking for photos.
Now if that Piko is in G Scale we could redo it up Tejas style! [:D]

That PIKE thing, of which i found a picture, is in G scale. I think it might be readily available from the general mail order people (trainworld, St. Aubin's etc).

It may be pricey, but I agree I has some potential. ESSO...SO...Standard Oil? Hummmm?

Looks like an interesting project. I wonder if Marty Kozad has anything on his layout? Seeing how he does modern mainline I'd say there is a chance. Being from PIKO is it pricey? Later eh...Brian.

Hi all
Being Piko it will be similar prices to Pola
Chemical plants are not known for being small so perhaps the Piko one could be the core of the plant.
With the rest built up from a load of plumbing pipe and fittings and plastruct structural shapes with iether a scratch or kit bashed office and dispatch area.
Not so sure this is really the sort of industry for a garden railway the finished product the model will not look very nice nor should it. mind you most industry doesn't look nice even an industrial size bakery is not really a pretty site

Well, really being here in Houston and Gulf port area we have many different sized plants which are apart of many peoples life styles.
Now I did love that write up on the steel plant in the HO magazine, it was very nice, old, rusting.
My time line as many don't know 1800s to 2000.
I sent HJ some faxes of the roads which he said he would Auto Cad them for me to get a number of road pieces.
While I was doing this the thought of a chemical plant came up. We (some of us) always have tank cars so why not fill them [:)]
Now days they will not let the RRs switch for them and so it is a contrractor who does it. I know cause I applied for a job there as a switchman.

I know these and other plants give people a living ect
just expressing a personal point of view.
Its not the sort of thing I want to go out in the garden and see I prefer the railway to blend in as well as it can with the garden so for me huge edifices like that are out.
I have seen some pretty good industrial area railways in both the model press and at exhibitions its just not the thing for me.
The people that can pull it off and make it so real have my respect and admiration just glad they don't model the smell that goes with it[:D]

I have to mind my Ps & Qs because if I do a project like this I don't want it to be 15 acres like I read one real plant was.

Is that Marty Cozad's stuff??? At the very top of the pics it says "Marty C's". Makes sense to me. I think this would be very much at home on a Garden RR. Really we can put what we wish in there. A structure like this sure makes for interesting conversation. Talk about DETAIL. WOW. Has me interested all right. Later eh...Brian.

Those pics are serious modeling skill looks like the plumbing pipe and structural shape type of thing I was getting at only a lot better

Yes Bman, that is Marty Cozad's stuff, sorry Marty [:I] was eary in AM when I made that web site and I was moving to get it done, just for the photos.

Well, Brian I was thinking different theams <sp> for Phase I which will be in year 2000 for the workers and there homes, cars, bars [:D], motel and throw in there some rich dudes 2 story home.

Notice in one picture of Martys that he has a paper book and a photograph. Both will be to the left in the photo.

I think Marty gives his tricks and tips away for free.
Remember he helped on that tip book coming out from GRR.
My service ran out on all my magazines from GRRs because I am biting the bullet and with it raining kills my landscaping job/s.[B)]

Yes, I know of Plastruct but I would have to drive 50+ miles to it. (besides it is not stocked all the time)
And another thing is I am not sure which dia., mm, cm, in, fractions to order online for G Scale. I am dang sure dont want something I don't need.

As my railway grows toward the back of my house, I have begun plans to use my pool pump and filter area as a chemical plant mockup. It will be on the large side, but I plan on adding some foreground items to make it more realistic... Just an idea...
