The Plunge
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 19, 2004 10:24 PM
Well, I did it. Bought a box of 8' dia. curve and 4 5' straight and 4 2' straight. After roughing out the layout and dodging the pine trees, am real happy. Had to put the 2'ers half way thru the curves, and think it looks good that way. Just need to fing a power supply. What size wire should I use? Was thinking around 16 or 18 gauge. Wouls this be allright?

Hope you didn't get wet [;)][:)][:D]

Forget about 16 or 18 AWG wire. 14 AWG will be OK, if your layout expands 12 AWG would be better.

Many people use the wire that is used for garden lights, if I remember correctly it is 12 AWG. Of course it can be burried, that's what it's made for.

glad to see you got some track down. As HJ said above go with 12 GA if you can, and go for a 5 or 10 AMP power supply. Then you can buy one time and your done, and you have enough power for the future. Aristo Craft (Crest) makes a good product for the $.

Good Luck and Have Fun.

Will have to get real power supply. Hooked up my old specturm power pack (pre-dcc HO days) and the loco moved. Only 20 volt/amps though. What a thrill. Got the wife hook, line, and sinker. Just think what a few cars and real power will do.

Nice one mate, makes it all worth while when they're rolling. Looks like happy days are here! Looks like you're going for the raised road bed, please keep posting your trials and tribulations on this, it will make interesting reading.
Cheers,

Yes mate good going, as someone else said it wil lnever be finished. I would advise you to get away from discreet sections of track as soon as you have the expertise; it is just not as good as forming your own, from a kit.

I am well into planning my third section and am removing a few palm trees and looking at building a viaduct there.

However I have done section 2 twice and section 1 1 1/2 times.

I have hardly started on section 3 and am planning to connect this third area up to area 1 with an overhead track, right over area 2; so its never finished.

Old Dad laments that he isn't finished after 10 years but he has a great layout and if you haven't got hopes and plans for the future, well its time to give it away.

shoveopoly,
Ben said it best. You are NEVER done. As a kid it drove my parents nuts that an HO layout was only good for a few months and then START AGAIN! Good for you for taking the plunge! Marty Kozad said it best during his seminar at the MWLSTS. "To those of you hesitating on this hobby because of cost...get over it. You will eventually spend the money anyways, so it may as well be on the trains." How true. Have fun eh! Later eh...Brian.[8D]
