Scale Question

The "stated" scale of Bachmann's "Big Hauler" line is 1:22.5. Many of the pieces that are based on specific prototypes do come out fairly close in that scale. Others, well, not so much. Fortunately, narrow gauge equipment was anything but standardized, so a single model may be "prototypic" in more than one scale. The aforementioned B'mann box car scales out to around 25' in 1:20.3, which--while arguably on the short end of the spectrum--wasn't out of character for narrow gauge equipment. When you compare Bachmann's 3-bay hopper to the prototype, you'll find it scales out to 1:20.3 in length, 1:22.5 in width, and 1:24 in height.

When it comes to models of narrow gauge equipment, I tend not to think so much of the scale marked on the box, but how the model measures when scaled to my particular scale. There is quite a bit of crossover for the modeler to avail him/herself.
