Lionel Large Scale engines--a good buy??

Any comments on the staying power for Lionel large scale diesels? They are less expensive than LGB, Aristo, USA Trains, but cheaper sometimes means 'cheaper'. Any thots would help on how well they will hold up under outdoor use?

I have had a large scale Lionel steam set that I have used every Christmas for about 10 years now. Inside use but engine continues to run continuously around the tree about 7 to 8 hours a day for 3 or four weeks per year.

A couple of plastic parts have been broken by the kids but it just keeps running and running with no maintenance at all.

I have even heard that they may start making some new large scale stuff soon.

Hope this helps.

One of the mail order houses had the Lionel large scale engines on a blow out sale for years at pretty low prices. I have seen them advertised lately, so they may be sold out. If interested you might try EBay
